Re: Gold price prediction

Just look at the breakdowns in crude and copper. They are stunning (but not in a positive sense)!
Anyone know what these commodities dropping portend for the economy?

Deflation, which is why gold is toast.

It's ironic that Fatman liked your comment, given that he keeps flogging fundsmith to every Tom Dick and Harry.
I think I was a bit unclear - I'm not against all technical analysis. I tried to highlight that those who work in the business for decades and have a very good feel/system for the markets can be genuinely successful. At the same time, I don't see why these people would give their edge away on blogs. For someone like the Fundsmith managers, having a blog might be a PR/marketing move to keep open towards their clients. For a generic blog that peddles gold and forecasts the end of the world every week with big flashing red letters, I'm leaning towards an interpretation that the readership traffic is the product, not their investment expertise.

the deflation is imported from the former BRICs where there is overcapacity now their economies have shrunk. This may well continue for a while

Re: Gold price prediction

The relevance of gold since 2010/11.
Just read a recently posted article that sent me down a serious rabbit hole that I must admit became too deep and dark at the first encounter.

A couple of quotes to warm you up...
  • The eurodollar standard, which had become seriously destabilizing by the late 1990’s had reached its end. It wasn’t until 2011 that it became clearer that the wounds of the 2007 and 2008 panic were mortal.
  • We know from bank balance sheets and income statements that there was a huge change in their resource commitments in the 2011 crisis and then again in 2013 that speeded up the withdrawal. That such “money tightening” would be picked up via gold channels is unsurprising even if the mechanism is difficult to grasp – it gets back to the simplest views on gold as an “inflation” hedge.

Re: Gold price prediction

China stops publishing Shanghai exchange's gold withdrawals

"Shanghai Gold Exchange withdrawals provided a unique transparent metric for Chinese gold demand, and it's gone. However, that the Chinese stopped publishing SGE withdrawals strongly confirms the importance of these numbers from the past. Until December these numbers gave us a direct measure of Chinese wholesale gold demand. The truth became a little uncomfortable for the Chinese."

Re: Gold price prediction

Things got a bit 'wobbly' to the upside in the gold and silver markets yesterday (Friday 5th Feb.).
Has somebody here been buying the miners in a big way? FMF?

That was 24 minutes & 47 seconds of my life I will never get back, I thought it might have some interesting points. Rather like being preached at in Church only the believers will listen.

Cambridge English Dictionary anyone ? That made me laugh, the definitive one being the Oxford English Dictionary. http://public.oed.com/about/

I avoid watching tin foil hat gold commentary - unless I'm REALLY bored.

Still. Gold up on stock market weakness:

The rising gold price has apparently quietened the gold detractors.
