Won a prize! What taxes should I pay?

Hi,

Today I was informed that I am the lucky winner of a test equipment (an oscilloscope)! Hurray

I won it by participating in an online draw arranged by the manufacturer. They will ship it for free to my address but terms of the draw state that any incurred taxes are going to be on me

The question is, what taxes I will have to pay? The company that makes this device is a US based company (Keysight) but they will presumably send it through their distributor in Switzerland. The street price of the equipment is around $4000.

Would I be required to pay import taxes? Any US taxes (I am not a US citizen btw)? Any other Swiss taxes?

Btw, is there anyone interested in buying a brand new Keysight Oscilloscope? I promise, it is a good one

It is going to be expensive for you....

... about 8% of the value, including shipping costs, plus a charge by the carrier to pay the sales tax for you, maybe $350 altogether!

Can you get the item shipped to a friend in the US? And collect it or sell it, the next time you are there?

Re: Won a prize! What taxes should I pay?

Sbrinz, thanks for your answer.

The usual 8% tax is not a major worry. I don't know for example in Vaud (where I live) I'll have to pay any other taxes for receiving a non-cash prize or I would have to pay any US taxes, just because!

As for collecting it in the US instead of Switzerland, I don't think that would be possible according the to the terms and conditions of the draw. I could change the delivery address inside Switzerland but I could not send it to another country.

Re: Won a prize! What taxes should I pay?

If Keysight (their Swiss subsidiary) is going to deliver the item to you in Switzerland, you will not have to pay any Swiss duties or VAT. They would have looked after that already.

I think what you are asking (but it is not totally clear) is whether you need to "declare" this prize on your CH taxes. If that is the case, you would normally have to declare the value of things such as lottery winnings (I think above CHF 1'000). You would have to check if something like this would be treated in the same way. And realistically, it would really be up to you to decide to declare it or not.

If they ask you to pay any "taxes" or other costs up front by Western Union, don't!

Ask Keysight to buy it off you, you may get 2000 for it.
