Submit tax declaration or not?

Hi All,

I'd like to know your opinion if I should or should not submit tax declaration for the past year.

Namely, I moved to Switzerland in Nov'14 and me and my wife were classified as "double-earners". However my wife stopped working in Jan'15 and has been unemployed for the whole 2015. I haven't changed the classification to "single-earner" anywhere since then.

I earn less than 120k CHF per annum therefore as far as I understand I don't have to submit the tax declaration. But actually I heard that in my case I should because I have to show the tax authority that we are no longer "double-earners" so they will change the status accordingly and possibly I can get some tax return for 2015 because of that.

I haven't had any legal advice yet, but maybe someone here had similar experience and can shed some light.

Thanks for help.

Go to your local tax office - you'll need to bring ID - and ask them directly. They'll have your records and in most cases can give a straight answer right away. They're usually very friendly if you're showing willing.

Re: Submit tax declaration or not?

Early communication is best as Uncle Max says, because if you don't hand them your actual declaration, they will estimate the taxes due to pay upon your last declaration and since you haven't changed the status yet, they will use the double earner status for their calculations!

Cue a big hole in your wallet and loads of stress to set things straight again.
