International Tax Laws

Hello. I'm an Australian and a resident in Switzerland. Just wanting to ask a Tax question.

I have a property in Australia and I pay tax in Australia on the income from this property. Am I also liable to pay Swiss Tax on this income or am I exempt from such a "double tax" ?

Do I have to declare my income from Australia on my Swiss tax return?

Thanks for any help.

Keith

Re: International Tax Laws

Yes, all forms of income and assets have to be declared however you'll find that there will be little tax to pay on the Australian property income (unless it significantly increases your overall income).

The aim is to not double tax you, but you should declare the income (after tax) from Australia.

Barbra.

Swiss residents must declare all global income and all global assets. The value of your Australian property is taxed for wealth here. And the net rental income is added to taxable income.

There may be a DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) between Switzerland and the other countries, where you are also liable for taxation. Each DTAA is different and must be carefully studied to determine what relief is available.

Switzerland has a progressive tax rate. Therefore, income and assets elsewhere, would bump you up into a higher tax slab for your Swiss income/wealth, even if the actual foreign income/wealth is not taxed here.
