I had a look through a number of threads on debts etc but couldn't find an answer to the following:

is there a way I can find out whether I have any of these betriebung things against my name?

I ask as I left CH (BS) last year and don't want to be arrested when I return for a visit later this year. (I've heard scary stories about this happening....)

I beleive I paid all outstanding bills before departure, but I did have an episode about 18 months ago with an Inkasso firm which I handled via regsitered letters etc etc - we ended up paying the outstanding bill directly to the creditor, but not the fees demanded by the Inkasso types.

So, I wanted to check all is in order before crossing back over the border. Any idea how I can do this?

You can ask for a "Betreibungsregisterauszug" (record of debt collection) at the office (Betreibungsamt) which costs about 20.- according to this post. That said, I don't know for how much time this is available after leaving if you have a clean record. The office won't give information by phone for privacy reasons.

Do you happen to know if one can reques the document you mention by phone (not the info per se, but the document) - as I am not in CH, I won;t be able to visit the office.....

You probably don't have to identify yourself by showing up at the office in person for a copy of the public summary. (First two paragraphs here). Maybe give them a call, the information is in the "Home" link.

But taking a step back: As a legal layman I think you won't be arrested because of a poursuite, they have to be given to you in person.

which seemed to suggest I should go to the betriebungsamt in my own canton, if i'm not in BS.... the US doesn't have one of these....
