Private School: Rebate for not using public schoool?

We live in BL, and our child goes to an international school, which for this year is payed by the company (and next year by us).

I heard a rumour (I think I even read it here, but for the life of me can't find it anymore) that we are eligible to get 2000 CHF a year from the Kanton because we don't use the public schooling system (which we pay for presumably in our taxes).

I can't speak German, but after bumbling around for several hours in Google translation found this:

http://www.baselland.ch/640-0-htm.274327.0.html

I am pretty sure that this:
Quote:
§ 100 Beiträge zum Besuch von Privatschulen
1 Der Kanton kann beim Besuch von Privatschulen Beiträge an das Schulgeld zugunsten der Erziehungsberechtigten ausrichten, sofern
a.
zwischen Kanton und Schule ein entsprechender Vertrag mit Leistungsauftrag besteht;
b.
says that the rumour I heard is right... But it offers no help in finding how I might go about asking for this 2000 CHF rebate.

Has anyone had experience actually getting this?? How do I do it?? I am not paying for schooling yet, but will for next year. Am I entitled to this even now when my company pays?

I (of course!) think it is a good system. If you don't use one of the major services that you pay for, but pay something higher, you should be entitled to a rebate like this...

Comment if you know about this please - I really have no idea, and my German is not so good yet!

It's true. I believe your school will automatically deduct it from the bill before passing it on to you. Also, it might be going up to 2,500 next year, but I'm not sure about that. Talk to someone in administration at the school and they should be able to help you and confirm this.

Re: Private School: Rebate for not using public schoool?

Great, thanks. That doesn't help me for this year, as the company is paying. There is no way to get it in cash?

Philosophical reasoning: My company gives me schooling for one year as part of my package. I still pay for the public school in my taxes. If my company gets this 2000CHF taken off their bill, they are in fact giving me less than they promised me.

Re: Private School: Rebate for not using public schoool?

Hi

I am a Financial Adviser here in Basel and my daughter also goes to private school.
That is the second time I have heard that school fees can be paid by the Canton.
I am fluent so I can follow this up directly with the relevant department.
I will be in touch.

Scott

Re: Private School: Rebate for not using public schoool?

My daughter, currently in the state system of BL, may be going to a private school soon. When I discussed with a Swiss colleague, he also mentioned the deduction. <rant on> Given the incompetence of her teacher, I think the Gemeinde should be funding the rest of her education <rant off>.

Thanks Scott, the details of how to go about this would be really appreciated. I tried calling my Gemiende, but they didnt know much about this, and advised me to contact "the authority concerned" (which happens to be the question I was asking them!! )

Re: Private School: Rebate for not using public schoool?

Just to let you know we live in Dornach and my son attends ISB we did not qualify for the 2,000chf as Dornach is classed as Solothurn. His friend on the other side of the road does qualify in Arlesheim. Your Gemeinde can give you a contact number to speak with the education dept or I agree the school will inform you if you are eligible, I guess something to think about when renting here especially if you have more than one child in the Private system.
