| | | Re: any interest in 'Investing 101" ?? This is a great idea, and full credit to Dino for suggesting this. It has suddenly turned into a decent-sized group. I'm guessing that people will come along with different experience and needs and questions. Some people might for example already know what shares are, whereas others will have no idea. Some might have a spare grand sitting in the bank, whereas others might have a mortgaged house in the UK that is worth less than they paid for it. It might be useful for everyone to manage their expectations a bit, decide what they want to get out of it, and to put some structure around the whole thing... For example, Dino has already stated that he won't be recommending any products or offering to manage peoples money. At the same time I guess that Dino won't be providing eg tax or legal advice, or sorting out peoples pension plans... Similarly, attendees will probably need to agree to any disclaimers attached to the presentation. For example, what happens if someone makes a bad investment as a result of what they thought they heard someone say? Maybe the attendees could think beforehand about what any questions that they might like to ask. To help with this, maybe they could think about their own answers to some of the usual investment questions... 1. How much would you like to invest? 2. Where (what country or market) do you want to do it? 3. How long do you want to invest the money for? One week, or a few years, or somewhere in the middle? 4. Does it matter if the money is locked up for a while? For example, would you be ok having to wait eg 3 months for access to your money? 5. Are you spreading your investments across several different things, or all your eggs in one basket? 6. What rate of return do you want, and how much risk are you willing to take? Are you willing to accept a higher rate of return, if there is a risk that you will lose some money? Are you willing to take a loss at some stage? 7. What things would you like to invest in? eg shares, savings account, gold, bonds, property, vintage motorbikes, a vineyard... 8. Is there anything that you will not invest in? eg tobacco companies, weapons manufacturers, companies involved in gambling or p*rn or alcohol or overfishing or deforestation or blood diamonds or animal testing, oil companies, anything to do with <insert random country name here>,... 9. You will probably need to pay tax on your investment somewhere - where will you do that? Just my CHF 0.02... cheers |

I am looking for a venue, but haven't come across anything costing less than a few hundred CHF. Since I do not intend to ask participants to pay, I will continue to look for a cheaper alternative.
In the meantime, if anyone here has access to a suitable venue (easily reachable, place for say 10-15 participants, and a beamer) either through work, or say a club membership etc, I would be grateful for your help.

I've been to a few meetings for different things held this way in Zug.
The number of people was getting a bit too many for me, so i'm out. A month since the thread started is a long time...I've got other plans now | | This user groans at MarieZug for this post: | |

I have been following the stock market, and anything financial for the past um, 30 years. It's not until a day after the market "bottomed out", maybe, that I came into stocks. Since then I am up on my lower ones at about 30 and the better ones just shy of 600%. I do not think I am some genius, just the market correcting itself for being way oversold.
What I would be very interested in is to learn alot of the terminology, and technical info. I could've done much better had I understood some things even better. I am long on all my stocks, but I am getting into more technical investing, or atleast I want to, and an intro to the jargon/lingo would be great.

Why don't consider renting one of those cabins from a town (comune) nearby Zurich? Don't know the prices in that part of the world, but around Lausanne where we live they cost around 150CHF. 150 CHF = 15 people. Very close to zero price. If you would like to do it nearby Lausanne, I would even volunteer to book it and pay for it in advance :-)

What I am looking at is possibly Day Trading. I know it is pretty risky but thinking of having a go.

Hi, I'm interested in this,
if the numbers are limited then how about in someones house? everyone bring a folding chair. My place (zurich) could probably squeeze in 15 people and I've got a beamer so I'll offer to host it if I can make the date, midweek preferred for me tho.

Well I had completely forgotten about this.
If enough people are interested, I am keen to do this now... either Friday (20th) or Saturday (21st) evening would work well, and I have a decent location available near the Centre of Zurich.
I would suggest starting at 6 pm. The presentation would last no more than 45 min (slightly more if we have lots of questions). After that we can spend 30-45 minutes on related stuff people want to discuss... or I am hoping someone else will volunteer to present their own thoughts? That way we can have a few different viewpoints..
The only rule I would insist on is that we aim to share and learn - but no selling of any products or services.
The location (+beamer) will cost CHF 80, so I am hoping some of those attending will chip in say CHF 5 each, but I do not intend to ask anyone for a fee.
I will need a quick show of hands - who is still interested and which day would you prefer?
- Friday, 20th Nov, 6-8pm
or
-Saturday, 21st Nov, 6-8pm
