London to Zug

Hi,

I currently live and work in London earning around £68k plus 15% (5% myself and 10% employer) into my pension pot. I do not have any saving presently except my pension pot. I am married with two young kids. My wife is not working presently. I am being offered a salary of CHF145K + 10% bonus (almost certain) and 13% (5.5% myself and 7.5% employer) second level pension for a position based in Zug. I am looking to put my son through English international school in Zug.
  • Is this offer in Zug sound higher than my current earning in London?
  • How much will I be able to save, if any, with my current offer?
  • English international school is it a dream on my earnings?
  • Anything else I should be aware of to make a decision?
  • How would this offer compare if the job is based in Basel and I intend to live in Outer Basel?
I very much appreciate your responses.

Thank you

Jey

Re: London to Zug

That is a good salary especially with the low tax rates in Zug but it does depend on your lifestyle choices and what you want to do in your free time. You can afford to send your child to international school on that salary but why would you want to? Save yourself CHF20k+ per year and send him to a local school, they are really good.

Also Zug is a great place to live if you are raising a family. I was out by the lake for dinner last night & there were lots of families around strolling by the water, feeding the ducks etc as it was a beautiful evening.

Re: London to Zug

Jey, as much as the money, you should consider the lifestyle implications. I worked for some time in Zug, and it is a charming town. Quality of life is excellent, the scenery is breath-taking, but it is a very, very different lifestyle than London-living.

Zurich is not far away if you decide that you need a dose of "city", but central Zug is "quaint" and you are very quickly into the Swiss countryside. This may be music to your ears, or it may be your worst nightmare.

Basel is a little different -- you'll pay more tax, certainly, but Basel is a much larger city than Zug, and has more of a city feel.

I guess what I'm saying is this: if you're a "flat in Islington" kind of guy, you'll probably find Zug too quiet, and Basel might be a better choice. If, on the other hand, you have already decided to move to Surrey for a quieter lifestyle and commute into the City, Zug will probably be right up your street.

Re: London to Zug

I was interested in this post as well. Its not easy to guess what the salary would be as its never a straight exchange rate co-efficient.

I've come accross http://www.ubs.com/1/ShowMedia/wealt...d_earnings.pdf which seems to suggest that you get better value for money in Zurich than anywhere else, in terms of domestic affordability. Sounds good to me!

I myself am looking to move in 3 years so the guessing game for my CH salary begins!
