Re: New to CH - where are the taxes lowest?

Fair point. The reason I tried this forum first was its informality. I doubt that I ever would have accessed some of the info in Lee Hadnum's book if I had just gone to see a tax accountant in Zurich.

Also the issues we're looking at are not limited to tax. For us the first question is "what are the best available tax deals across the various cantons/communities" and then move on to whether that's somewhere we'd consider living.

Lastly: the sense (possibly misguided) that the forfait side of things has a bit to do with practice as well as tax law.

Re: New to CH - where are the taxes lowest?

I think Zug is your best option if you want a nice quality of life as well as low taxes. It's a lovely place albeit a bit quiet if you don't have a family as well as being within proximity to Zurich etc. It depends what you want really. If you want to reduce taxes only, then OW is probably your best bet, but if you want a place where people speak some English, good transport links etc. then I'd say Zug is a great spot. Depends what you're used to in Ireland though. From West Cork myself so I fit in well with the country folk

Thanks a lot. That confirms what I'm gathering from some other sources: excellent tax deal and good if slightly quiet quality of life. Sherkin Island without the (many) taxes

Can anyone recommend a canton with
- a relatively low all-in income tax rate
- decent quality of life and airport connections
- relatively fast visa-processing (want to get it done before 31/12/09)
It may not be obvious but there is one place that meets the criteria very well. Opfikon is right next to ZH airport, has one of the lowest tax rates of the canton of Zürich and furthermore has the advantage that rents are dirt cheap. Opfikon may be much maligned and not really able to compete with places in Zug etc in terms of glamour, snobbishness and having the "right" neighbours, but it has its prettier corners, you're in the centre of Zürich in no time and it has its fair share of decent shopping and restaurants and a sparkling cosmopolitan atmosphere (by Swiss standards anyway, which isn't really saying much) and a dynamic young population - factors you probably won't find in Zug or Schwyz. Worth a thought maybe?

Re: New to CH - where are the taxes lowest?

Thank you very much - wouldn't have found it without you

An effective rate of about 24% on annual income of say EUR200,000, according to Comparis. Zumikon seems a bit lower-tax.

I'll look into it, thanks again.

Level of income makes a huge difference, need an idea before anyone can answer.

If they are not working & want to do a tax deal 400k is the lowest income going forward.

Re: New to CH - where are the taxes lowest?

Looking at this tool makes me hard to understand why people in the EU haven't "invaded" CH yet. If you take into consideration income taxes and VAT, probably a middle class person in France, Italy, Spain, etc., probably pays the double of the taxes than a similar person in CH!

Because believe or not it doesn't just boil down to money. Your statement makes the assumption that the person could either find work or be happy to retire to a country where they have no network - friends/former colleagues/etc
