Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

Hi guys,

I have been in Switzerland for a year now.

I just changed job in Switzerland, done my first month in new company.

Now during my time in my first company from July 2009, every month I would get deducted -

QST Abzug Automatish - 12% - CHF 733

(For information I am single, 26, and on a Work Permit B)

Now in my last paycheck from my last company in Switzerland,

I got something new written -

QST Abzug Automatish - 19% - CHF 1425
Basis zur berechnung der prozente 11,150.35
Verrechnung mit betrag 733.10
Verrechnung mit betrag 0.00

- Am I getting cut more than I should? Why did my percent and my tax at source get cut more than before?

- Can I claim this money back? I feel I am getting cut more?

- My gf is Swiss, and she says when they do their tax form at the end of year, they fill in lots of info and then it is based on that, how much tax they must pay. I am on B permit, so shouldn't there be something I can do to claim something back?

'

Any help in general would be appreciated. Any questions, feel free to ask ' I am really confused with this stuff

Thank you

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

At the new company you are being taxed on a monthly salary of 11150.35. If CHF 733 was 12% at the old place that means you earned around 6000 there. If your new salary really is 11K then congratulations! :-) If not...was there a welcome bonus or relocation allowance or anything similar. If so you might be taxed differently in the first month...

Oh you misunderstood my post

My post was meant to say - During my time at my FIRST company I was getting taken out CHF 733.10 at a rate of 12%

Then in my last wageslip from THE SAME COMPANY - I got taken off more. I got taken off 1425 at 19% and it had that additional stuff written in german also

I was asking why/what that was about

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

Whatever your wage is, in a particular month, that's the tax rate you pay - as if you received that monthly wage every month. So, if you earn 6000 one month, 18000 the next, and 3000 the following, you'll end up paying more tax, via QST, than if you'd earned 9000 each month.

As for claiming excess tax back - that's been covered many times.

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

Must be your 13th month salary...when you leave a company during the year you usually get your 13th salary pro rata temporis.

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

Definitely looks like you've just got your 13th wage. Most companies pay it out at the end of the year (December), but in your case it appears to have been paid a year after joining the company. I get the same problem every December and my tax goes through the roof.

In answer to your question about claiming something back, I believe (read not sure) you can request that you complete a tax form, but be careful - you may find yourself owing more.

Edit:- having just re-read the thread, is the gross amount of 11150 your normal monthly wage? if so it does seem funny that your tax has suddenly gone up. Are you yet to receive any outstanding bonus, payment in lieu of holidays not taken etc?

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

According to http://en.comparis.ch/steuern/quelle...lensteuer.aspx 19% is correct for canton Berne, and 11150CHF per month.

If I put in HALF of that - 5575 per month, I get what you say you used to have deducted - i.e. 12%.

So, it looks like you got two month's pay in one. Now, go and look at the previous month's payslip, and see what the "Basis zur berechnung der prozente" for that was. If it was still 11150, then you've not had too much tax deducted this time, you had too little deduct all the previous times.

You should know whether your salary was around 72'000CHF or around 140'000CHF.

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

I always got deducted 12% - which is 733

In my last paycheck with the last company I got deducted 19% which is the 1425 figure

I was on 78k CHF in my last job

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

If you were on 78k for your last job, 11k is not your normal gross. You were most likely paid out you unused but accrued vacation and your pro-rata bonus for 6 months. Thus your gross is more and your QST is a greater % as quoted in previous post.

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

I still don't get it

And I was never on a bonus

??

All I know is that - I was on 78k

In 1 month i would get 5.8k

After deductions, I get 4.4k

-

Now in my LAST PAYCHECK with the LAST COMPANY, Instead of getting 4.4k, I got 3.5k after deductions DUE to this bigger QST deduction

According to THIS:

You got paid 11'1550.35 CHF on your last pay. I.e. you got double the usual amount.

How much was paid into your bank account (after deductions) this month. Less than 4.4K or more?
Much less!

I got paid in 3.5k CHF

?!?! Something is weird right?

Re: Higher tax than usual or am I ok?

Something is weird. Yes. (Sorry, deleted my last post, 'cos I misread what your wrote ).

Your tax has been calculated as though you've earned 11K. And then they've deducted that amount from 5,5K.
