Valuing 1950's Swiss banknotes

Hope this is the right forum for this question.

I wonder if anyone knows the value of Swiss 100 Frank banknotes from 1950's (with boy and lamb picture). Are they more valuable as collector's items, old banknotes? Or can they be exchanged at the bank for new notes?

If anyone has ideas on where to proceed with selling or cashing here in Zurich, please let me know.

Thanks!

I was gonna be a smart-arse and say that it was worth CHF100-, but Google says I'm wrong. As currency, it seems that it has no value.

Sure, in the United States you can spend any bank note ever issued by the federal government, regardless of its age. Perhaps the note will have more value to collectors, but you can spend it legally if you really want to.

This is not necessarily true with old bank notes of foreign countries. Switzerland is a great illustration of this. The Swiss government has recently announced that all old bank notes issued in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s will lose their value (called demonetization) April 30, 2000. Happy millennium to you, too!

No idea what it's worth to a collector. Someone will be along in a moment who actually knows what they're talking about.

Thanks, Village Idiot, for the info and article. Doesn't sound good for the little stash grampa left me, unless there's value to collectors.

The notes depicted in the SNB announcement are "6th Series" (from the 1970s), whereas the OP's 100 Stutz note ("boy and lamb") is from the "5th series" (from the 1950s). SNB may not exchange the older ones, since they're not depicted in the announcement. In any case, from the other link, it looks like they may be worth plenty more than their face value to collectors.

Re: Valuing 1950's Swiss banknotes

There is a note dealer where I used to work in Luzern if interested in selling.

Address is Habsburgerstrasse 20, 6003 Luzern I can't remember its name

Wow, just got home to find this fantastic response and just the info I need. Thank you all so much. I'll have to see which edition of boy and lamb I have, but they're definitely folded so the value is less. I'll follow these leads, and meanwhile any other info or expressions of interest are certainly welcome!

Re: Valuing 1950's Swiss banknotes

Putting my numismatics hat on The three factors in collecting are condition, rarity, and demand. Oh, and things that look pretty.

If the piece/note is quite rare then the condition doesn't matter that much.

If the piece is fairly common then it needs to be in immaculate condition to demand a good price. You say your notes are folded - that will definitely drive down the price, unless there's something special about them, eg they are a reissue of a destroyed note or have an unusual signature on them. That's probably something that a scrupulous dealer would be able to tell you.

And if there's more buyers than sellers then all the better for you

In any case you need to show them to a dealer. Just be aware that dealers do it for a business, and will add/remove their margin from any supposed "book" price...

The other option is that you put them in an envelope and sit on them for another 10 years. The prices only go up.

There may be other SNB announcements for earlier series. Worth asking the SNB unless the collectors are offering a premium on face value.
