shipping boxes to Switzerland (personal use) - tax / duty query

I am packing some clothings, computer, and planning to ship via Postal Office to Switzerland for personal use.

Will there any tax from Swiss Custom? I hope it will not be too much troubles.. shipping is not cheap from USA to Switzerland.

You might Google 'excess baggage shipping from usa' and talk to one of those specialized firms about Swiss Customs clearance. Their use of a customs broker is likely to get you a better deal than the postal system, and they will give you guidance on how to fill out the customs forms.

Personal effects are not subject to tax and duty. The rules are here.

While this is true you need to state that the goods are personal effects associated with a move to the shipping agent responsible for shipping and you need to personally come and pick the things up from the collection point at the border which is usually at an airport or tax free warehouse. This can be a royal pain so make sure you know where the delivery point is.

Re: shipping boxes to Switzerland (personal use) - tax / duty query

Hello, we've recently moved to Switzerland and got 8 boxes couriered from India. I ahve recd invoices from Fedex totalling to CHF 650 - which is mostly customs duty. Everything couriered was personal belongings but the courier back home didnt mention that on the invoice (I had no clue of this as only the packing was done before us, invoices made later). How can I pply for a refund to the Swiss authorities? Any leads will be helpful. Thanks!

You might want to read the instructions for Customs Form 18.44, which allows importation of household goods duty-free:

Re: shipping boxes to Switzerland (personal use) - tax / duty query

Thank you so much for your reply Mullhollander. I am reading the details on the link you sent. However, I have a quick question - the boxes have already been delivered to me and now after 3 - 4 weeks i get invoices out of the blue. Would like to ask if you know - whether there is a way in which I can apply for a refund of the duty paid?

Once again, thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am going through what you have sent.

Hello. You may want to check out Sendmybags web site on the Internet. I successfully used this site this year to ship personal effects/clothes. Prices vary based on weight. I think I paid about $250 for sending a duffel bag that could weigh up to 66 pounds and this included all fees, etc.
