US citizen living in Germany can we open a bank account?

My dh is employed by the US in Germany and we also live in Germany. Can we open an account in Switzerland in his name and transfer US dollars into it?

I saw another thread that seems to suggest otherwise....If not, how can we hold Swizz francs? Can we tranfers our dollars into Euros first and then deposit them? Is the issue that he is a US citizen? I am a British citizen but have not lived there for 14 years, can the account be in my name? I do not pay taxes in the UK I file jointly with my dh in the US.

I have no idea what a "dh" is, but if you're abbreviating something, please don't and spell it out

As for the account, you can try. However, you're more likely to have luck than your spouse.

You may be able to get a German account denominated in Swiss Francs, have you tried asking at the banks there?

the problem with US citizens is that the US govt assumes that that all such expats are tax dodgers and start to foam at the mouth if you open a swiss bank account.

banks have various disclosure requirements and will ask the account opener (you or the dh) whether you are a US citizen or not. it's probably worth talking to them as they can explain the pros and cons to you.

Re: US citizen living in Germany can we open a bank account?

If you want to hold Swiss Francs for currency appreciation I suggest that you first see if you can have a Swiss Frank account with your current German bank.

Facts if you want an account in a Swiss bank:
  1. If you have a green card you are a "US Person" and will be treated exactly like your husband by both the Swiss banks and the US Internal Revenue Service.
  2. It is perfectly legal for a US Person to have a foreign bank account; if the balance ever exceeds $10,000 at any time over the course of a year a special form must be filed.
  3. Many, but not all, Swiss banks have decided that the hassle of dealing with US Persons makes it not worth their while to have them as customers. PostFinance, at least, is perfectly happy to deal with them, entirely in English if need be (I have a small account with them).
  4. If you go to a post office to open the account, as a Swiss resident might, you are very likely to be misinformed. Go to a PostFinance office.
  5. Difficult to open from outside the country, as they will want your passport, not an issue as I believe you live reasonably close to the border.

I think you will find that Swiss banks will not have the welcome mat out for US citizens. There have been a few (eh....how should I put it) local difficulties in the last number of years. Nothing major of course - you understand.

Re: US citizen living in Germany can we open a bank account?

If the source of the money is legitimate, you could have accounts in all the currencies you want in Germany itself, although the banks might charge you more to keep the account operational in a foreign currency, than the local one. The same would be true for Switzerland as well, apart from the effects of political repercussions lately.
