Such high wages and not much savings?

You guys gave me a friendly third degree about having 300k saved up and sitting in the bank. Now I have gone through some threads here and it seems lot if not most of you are making 100-200k every year. I earn nothing close to that and still have managed to save 300k in my 30s.

What I am getting at is how come you lot have the balls to suggest that I am the loaded person when you lot are minting it? Either you guys have been through lot of divorces and child maintenance payments or I shall assume that you were all making fun of my peanut savings?

Re: Such high wages and not much savings?

i think i need a lesson from you in saving.....are you a accountant ?

i have been here 4 years , i earn around 100k per year , my living costs here match my earnings although i do send some home to the uk for family .

i have a nice apartment , we drink champagne have holidays , treat our family when we can , eat good food , have many parties with friends etc etc ....

hmmmm now i know why i have no savings in switzerland ...

Re: Such high wages and not much savings?

So you earn nothing close to 100k yet have saved up 300k? So my estimation of nothing close to 100k is 50k. You're 30 so must have been earning since you where 21 (and not gotten a pay rise)

So you've earned 450k and only spend a third of that? I spend a third of my salary on rent alone.

Three kids and a house.

What's the point of having money if you can't enjoy it, mind.

I'm afraid I don't have the endurance to sit in the cold and dark, with only the glow of street-lights reflecting off my growing pile of gold coins for comfort...

Re: Such high wages and not much savings?

does that mean you have been putting aside CHF 2500 a month for the last 10 years? Or did you inherit the money?
Or are you including your pension in this 300K?

Re: Such high wages and not much savings?

So I have been accused of boasting. I was not boasting because I am 100% sure that majority of the people here have double if not triple of what I have in my bank account. Additionally they own property here or abroad.

Boasting about 300k in Switzerland is like a virgin boasting about his imaginary one night stands at a porn convention.

I am in the same situation, barely make over 100k a year but got over 300k of savings (and am still in my 30's). Except for this year (bought a new car) I save about a third to half my after-tax income. But I come from a good katholic upbringing where going to a restaurant or any other indulgance is something special only done at special occasions. And I am a big fan of delayed gratification

What exactly are you saving towards?

Going to nice restaurants and indulging in things I like, makes me happy and gives me additional pleasure You never know what is round the corner - life is for living and enjoying in the moment.

I am all for saving towards retirement or for a house but I want a balance between saving and enjoying what my money can buy.

Re: Such high wages and not much savings?

married at 21, first child at 22. We now have three kids ten years later...last year was the first year that we both earnt serious full time money...and it cost us $30,000 to relocate from Australia (from our own pockets).

Enjoy your earning capacity while it lasts. Some people save through their 20's, some have parents who put down deposits on their mortgage for them 'to get them started' and some look from the outside 'wealthy' and from the inside will fall into a debt hole in the next 5-10 years...

Who knows what tomorrow may bring ? That, and I know a significant proportion of my peers will leave it too late to ever have children...even if they were 'planning' them...

I want to use it to supplement my income, in a few years I will switch to a (much lower) paid part-time job in a sunny country by the beach. In my profession there are plenty positions available on the cote-d'azur, in Italy and in Spain. Working there 80%, enjoying the climate but still having an acceptable income (supplemented from savings) is what I'm after.

Re: Such high wages and not much savings?

I enjoy life and spend plenty. Just not recklessly on trashy things. You will be surprised how little you actually need to have a good time. Being a Buddhist helps me immensely.

Unlike swisspea I don't have kids so no one to drain me. Freedom is what makes me happy. Viva la libertad.

Why did you feel the need to tells us you have 300k saved up in the first place? I earn less than 100k by the way, and can't afford to save!!!!

still have fun though :0)

so when you die, the state will get the nice savings.

here is a secret: all who died left the money behind them.
