Hi all, I mentioned in another part of the forum that I am coming over next week for an interview. I will be needing to buy a rail ticket. All I need to know is do UK Visa debit cards work in ticket machines over there?

Or do I need to use a credit card/cash..?

Any help for someone who seems a bit lost.

I can't work out whether I am being overly-cautious or just useless...

Unsure if your UK issued card can work, but:

ZVV is the public transport company for Canton Zurich, which covers the airport and Zurich Main Railway station.

Visa debit cards work fine. I had problems with my HSBC Maestro, not the same as Swiss Maestro, and then HSBC phased them out and replaced all with Visa debit. Always keep some local cash in your wallet though.

Visa Debit should work fine... be aware of foreign exchange fees and exchange rates...

If you have a credit card (Master Card / Visa) might be helpful just in case it doesn't work.

Maestro Debit cards work fine too.

Maybe it's just me but my HSBC VISA debit card doesn't work anywhere in german speaking Switzerland so I have had to rely on an HSBC Mastercard instead

I can vouch for A&L Visa debit working fine.

I will say, as a Brit who uses their card everywhere, be prepared for a change. The system is pretty geared up towards cash over here from first appearances. I've been here a week and have never used cash so much in my life. Perhaps it's just me...?

HSBC were always blocking my card here stating fraud detection and unusual spending patterns... I phoned them and they sorted the problem out. Next time get the decline code from the retailer and report it to your bank.
