Cantonal and Federal Tax

Hello all,

I am new to this and am moving to Geneva in two months time. I plan to commute from France as a frontalier.

I am trying to get my head around the tax system. Initially, I was under the impression that I would pay Geneva cantonal income tax and Social security payments. However, some of my research suggests that I will also pay Swiss Federal Taxes. Is this the case?

Any help or good english websites/sources on this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cantonal and Federal Tax

Hi EllanVannin, welcome to the forum.

Nice first question

I'm not sure I understand you correctly: will you be living in Geneva and work in France? (since you mention you move to Geneva but will commute from France?)

The frontier worker rules can be rather complicated. Therefore, I can only give a general comment. If you live in CH and work in FR and receive official frontier worker status, you will be taxed in CH, since under the frontier workers agreement between CH and FR you will be taxed in the state where you live (i.e. CH). This will include the Swiss federal tax (Bundessteuer).

I would advise you to get professional guidance on this, don't rely on EF knowledge too much...

Re: Cantonal and Federal Tax

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry - I will be living in France and working in Geneva. I am trying to work out what my total tax and social security bill will be.

My understanding is that I will pay Geneva canton tax and swiss social security payments. However, I am unclear as to whether I pay Swiss Federal tax too? I also understand that the French government require me to have medical insurance in France.

As a frontalier working in Geneva, you will be subject to tax at source in Geneva, levied directly from your salary. The tax at source rate includes federal, cantonal and communal tax. That tax will be credited against your French taxes.

Re: Cantonal and Federal Tax

Thanks very much for clearing that up for me. Couldn't find any official information regarding it online. Incidently, are there any information
sources that you would recommend for frontaliers generally?
