Who's an expat?

Hi all,
My tax advisor advised me that according to the Swiss law, a person is considerd as an expat in Switzerland (for tax dedction reasons), only if he worked in the same company before moving to Switzerland. If I move to switzerland for a specific position (not working in this company before) - I can not deduct rent, relocation cost etc.. as an expat.

This doesnt seems very logic to me. Can someone advise??

Cheers,
O

Re: Who's an expat?

hows this not logic to you?

You move to find a different job, who is supposed to pay for your cost of moving here? your new company? They can easily find someone who is already here.
Your old company, well......no

unless im completely the point here I do not see or understand your question?

Re: Who's an expat?

I was told by a tax advisor that you can deduct the rent & relocation costs only during the first 3 years of your stay in Switzerland.

That was a long time ago, and I was already longer than 3 years here.

My advice: get another tax advisor.

Re: Who's an expat?

I guess the OP's question was whether what his TA had told him is correct.

I don't know about that as this is the first time I hear about it. But if the first half (that is that if you work for the same company in CH as before) is true then my husband is fully eligible. Could someone please explain how this works or direct me to a page or something where I can find some information? Many thanx.

Re: Who's an expat?

Ooops .... I never really knew what an Expat was till I came to live here ... and then thru reading my way thru things ... began to understand that I was/am one ... and now I find I am not.

What am I then? ..... Expat, equals, in my mind ... "ex-patriotic" ... no longer living and supporting "my country" ... so now I dont support any country? ..... What am I .. now? .. A leech? Nein, I am not leeching off anyone .... just living in another country....

Okay, so you guys have things like Financial Adivsors ...who understand a "new-speak" of terminology.
