How long did it take for your tax refund to come through?

I just completed my tax return for 2009 and found that I'm due some money back. I've heard it can take a very long time but I'm wondering what it normally takes. Also, would I get mine back quicker because I'm pretty late?

I sent mine in June and got a letter 2 weeks ago that they will refund the money asap. Have not seen the money yet though.

I doubt you get any Brownie points with the Swiss authorities for doing anything late.

I got a nasty registered letter from them instead reminding me to put the form in.

i understood that you don't receive an actual refund but that the amount is deducted from the next cycle...but we're in a different canton!

I also had to do a return for 2009.(I was unfortunately 125 chf above the treshold).

My time was split to 2 periods: international traveler (until my family was at home and I flew every weekend back to them) and normal since they are here. I will get a refund for teh first period, and I have to pay more for the second. My accountant advised me to pay right now the diff for 2nd period and she said it could take a lot of time to get the refund (even a year). BUt basically she could not tell me anything about timing. Not that we are talking about big amounts so I dont care.

We go the same letter. We were very confused because both our salaries are below the threshold we didn't think we had to complete the form. Apparently we do.

Re: How long did it take for your tax refund to come through?

If you mean a Swiss return then this is slightly off topic but may be of use anyway.

With my UK tax return it took 5 weeks from sending the form to the refund arriving in my bank account.

This is to reclaim all the the tax deducted at source from UK bank account interest which you can do if you are resident here to avoid double taxation, as it should be taxed here. (Article 11 of Double taxation agreement between UK & CH) You need to fillin and send part of Help Sheet 302 with the UK tax return.

When I was taxed at the source, I would get the adjustment (due to the 3rd pillar deposits) back 2 to 3 weeks after notifying the authority.

At the moment, I am still waiting for my tax bill for 2008!

Well no, I'm not "late" I'm just at the back end of the allowable time. I thought maybe they'd be in a rush to close the refund book for 2009.

Re: How long did it take for your tax refund to come through?

While you are married you are taxed together, so two medium salaries becomes one large tax account.

There is a move to change the law as it encourages people to live together unmarried....

Depending on the size of the refund and the Canton's decision, sometimes tax credits are carried forward to the next year.

You may be charged interest on your late tax return. They argue they cannot tax you during this period because they don't know how much you have earned, and so they have lost income. In Berne it is 3.5% p.a, but then you might just get a fine.

My tax return is not late. We applied for and were granted an extension. This is quite normal.

Re: How long did it take for your tax refund to come through?

I have had previously had refunds for both:
i.e. 1. Direkt and
2. Staat & Gemeinde tax.

Both have chosen either to:
A. credit me for this amount the following year, or
B. transfer a refund (wir werden Ihr Guthaben überweisen).

For B. this has happened within 2-4 weeks of receiving the letter (which also indicates the interest you receive on the number of days the overpayment has been held)............. I think.

I too am currently waiting for 2.B after receiving a letter - but my letter came only 8 days ago, after completing my tax refund in February.

Plus, currently being "arbeitslos" this whole calendar year, it hurts paying this years tax, at last years (employed) tax rate, knowing I have to wait another 12 months to get my over-paid (Direkt, and Staat/Gemeinde) tax back. Consolation is it earns 2% interest. As far as I know, that's the way the system works.

It can work the other way too when eating cheese and having not paid for it. - but they catch up with you, again 12 months later. However, in this case, they have always demanded immediate payment, and not later adjustments.

I just got 2008 back, so technically that goes into the years bucket I guess.

+2 for Denise - highly recommended!

FYI, in Schaffhausen, I got the assessment back within 3 weeks of submitting the return. I then had 30 days to dispute their calculations before receiving the refund...

Filed 2008 Swiss taxes in fall of 2009. Still pending my refund. My tax advisor mentioned this could take up to two years.
