Christmas Pudding in Zürich

Had a quick löök around for a Xmas Pud source on the forum, unfortunately to no avail.

Does anyone know where Mrs Bosch can buy a nice Christmas Pudding this year? We're in Zürich.

Thanks
Harry.

I watched a TV program about making your own a while back. Yet they said for traditional christmas pudding you'd need to start making it in January for consumption in December.

Re: Christmas Pudding in Zürich

Just make enough for this year and next. I agree this should be homemade, store bought Xmas pud should be a capital offence.

Re: Christmas Pudding in Zürich

The Viadukt Markthalle has them at various vendors. I tried one with black walnuts from Nick Rose Catering which was very good. The Pie Shop ladies have the plummy puds which are also very tasty.

I saw them at Coop today. I'm guessing that if they have them in Lausanne they'll have them in Zurich.

I know orrel fussli in Bahnhofstrasse sold them last year. I'm not sure if they were good though - I think they were Walkers brand.

Re: Christmas Pudding in Zürich

I made 3 x 1 Kg ones in August and have been lovingly feeding them a slug of brandy every two weeks to keep moist. My old Mum gave me a recipe my Great Grandmother used to use.
If you buy them ready made, keep the container and you can use them again and again.

Harry
2 lb Raisins
1 lb Currants
1 lb Mixed peel
1 lb Demerara sugar
1 lb Suet
1 lb Sultanas
8 oz Plain flour
8 oz Breadcrumbs
2 oz Almonds
1 Tablespoon salt
1 Nutmeg (ground)
1 Teaspoon mixed, 5, or all spice
8 Eggs
1/2 Pint of old Ale
Juice of 1 lemon, and rind grated

That little lot is over 8 lb, or over 3.5 Kilo, so you will need a big bowl, or proportionally smaller.

Mix all the ingredients, then put in pudding bowl(s). Cover with muslin, or greaseproof paper, and tie. Make a handle from the string so you don't burn your hands when you lift it out. If you've got old containers, use those with the lids.
Place in a saucepan of boiling water about 2/3 up the side of the bowl, and steam for 8 hours. Remember to top up the water periodically.

On Christmas day, steam again for about an hour, depending on the size. Put it on when you are serving the turkey.

If you don't eat it straight away, make a few holes with a fork every couple of weeks, and put a shot of brandy, or whatever your preference is. If you eat it within a couple of weeks, you don't need to do that.

These are the ones I made in August

Re: Christmas Pudding in Zürich

Anyone care to share where you can get a decent Christmas Pudding. I know Globus, Jelmoli sell them, has anyone eaten either?

Re: Christmas Pudding in Zürich

www.britshop.ch have some. I was looking at them the other day to get an idea of prices to compare with Globus' tomorrow. Didn't get around to making one this year. Nor any more mincemeat for pies.

Re: Christmas Pudding in Zürich

They are really not difficult to make. Here's the recipe I make:

http://www.jamieoliver.com/magazine/...istmas-pudding

For suet, place a stick of butter in the deep freeze and grate it into the mix in place of the suet. Treacle you can get at Globus and Jelmoli. If you own a pressure cooker, you can cook it by steaming with pressure off for 30 mins, then at 5lb pressure for about 2 to 2.5 hours. Pour a tablepoon of brandy over the cooled pudding then store, covered with greaseproof and foil in a dark cupboard for upto a month.

We don't have a sixpence to hand these days, so substituted a plastic Grittibänzli figure.

Cheers,
Nick
