Good thread for when I'm out of dinner ideas!

Tonight I'm making vegetable soup with lots of fresh vegetables and little meat balls. And home made white bread to dip in the soup
Yes, I find the same When in a quandary I take a look at this thread for ideas.

I was going to make a vegetable soup for tonight but got lazy about cleaning and chopping up vegetables.
So have settled on some leftover mutton stew on left-over Basmati rice, with some nice big fat mutton chops. . . . (from a 12yr old sheep that was slaughtered this week by farmer up the hill, and I did the cutting up of the meat - for which I get a discount on the kg price )

I finally discovered why one cannot find "real" loin chops in CH .... the locals cut out the fillet and "Nierstuck" and discard the bone - that makes the (in ZAR) loin chop with meat on both sides. on bone. And I got to choose how much fat I wanted on the meat.

Farmer guy thinks I`m nuts, keeping bone and fat in meat - so he threw in 1 kg for free, besides my discount price.

Re: Tonight's dinner?

Bobotie- and the best bit, HE made it with his old mum's recipe which we found at our daughter's the other day (mum's been gone for about 15 years now).

Now we really do live in the sticks- and great and quick pizza delivery too- homemade with great choice of toppings- on very rare occasions too.

Home made, store bought, take away or home delivered?

Come to think of it, is there such a thing as home delivered pizza here? Seems scarce to non-existent around these parts....

We waited for one hour for a pizza to be delivered the other night and when we called to ask how much longer we had to wait we were told another 35 minutes. We just ended up pick it up ourselves.
Where pizza delivery does exist (or at least in my neck of the woods), better make sure you're not hungry!

There are three places that will deliver pizza to us and we're out in the sticks so I'm sure there'll be somewhere near you.
Never had to wait long to get them either. ( not that we order them very often)

Re: Tonight's dinner?

Last night's dinner was paprika-spiced carrot soup, garnished with toasted pine nuts and crispy lardons.

It was one of those "make it up as you go" cooks. Into veg stock went sauteed carrots and onion. Season, then cook until carrots soft, add a bit of milk. Into blender with a bit of cream cheese. Blend, return to pot to rewarm. Toast nuts and fry lardons.

Turned out alright, though probably added a bit too much paprika. It was a tad spicy, which I could tolerate, but others might not.

Lausanne may be lacking (I wouldn't know), but Obwalden/Nidwalden/Luzern seem adequately served in the pizza delivery arena. BUT, I can't speak from personal experience (we always eat homemade pizza unless we scavenge something from Coop at half-off), so I can't vouch for delivery times, quality, etc. — I only know there are multiple pizza delivery option in the area, and I've heard no complaints from neighbors or acquaintances.

So there's that, then.

Re: Tonight's dinner?

Last night's rather simple dinner.

Escalope of pork, pan fried to a tender point just after the end of pink. Served with sliced leeks, roschti potatoes and the jus from the pork. Probably could have taken the jus a little bit further, but at the final point I thought it was just about to stick back to the pan. Some would say to throw in a knob of butter at the end, but I was lazy to get out the butter just to cut out a knob.

Pan frying is a pleasure many times, but geez it can make a bit of an oily mess...

Fratel E Napule, at Rue de la Tour. Great pizza and pretty normal prices (the online prices are these for delivery if I am not mistaken; if you eat there it's cheaper). If you eat in place keep in mind you might have to wait as there are few tables and many loyal customers.
