Do you know any Hungarian grocery shop in Switzerland? There was one in Zürich but I don't think it still exists.
Yeah, it's true, and I don't know any other somewhere else in CH, but I suppose that it doesn't mean they don't exist.
For every Romanian and Hungarian recipe I use I usually try to find local substitutes. Of course it does not taste exactly the same but I try my best and I was very happy to see that our friends in Migros decided to have a little spot with Balkan/ East European products, mainly from Croatia or some "Swiss edition " of traditional Balkan food. Of course it is a pitty they don't extend their searches to other parts of E Europe.

Anyhow, if I were in Geneva I'd probably visit a lot that Perla Russe or the other spots you have mentioned.

From one side it's good, but from the other it makes difficult to survive for independent Balkan / East European shops. And MIGROS will never have the same choice of these products as independent stores do.

I totally agree.
In Migros (or Coop) you can find only very few things on the same shelf with Asian food, I was actually surprised when I saw them, I only guess this is because of so many employees from ex Yugoslavia, or who knows. So don't worry, they will never be a threat for independent shops.

Yes. MIGROS is very conservative in introducing ethnic products. But I guess, Yugoslav population here is rather large and achieved a critical mass to have their products on MIGROS shelves. The same before was done for Portuguese products. Coop is more innovating in this sense, they have more products (by the way also Hungarian paprika) but still don't replace ethnic shops.

For good choice of Balkan products along with some Russian and Polish ones, I can recommend the Pam store in Meyrin. They have rather good choice, including fresh and frozen products.

Re: East European Food in Switzerland

There is a grosery shop in Pully, Lausanne area selling different type of food, including Russian and Ukrainian one: pelmeni, vareniki, caviar, salty cucumbers, tvorog, different types of "kolbasa", prjaniki, pickled mashrooms, grechka etc. Those who know russian and ukrainian food, will understand the names. The address is: Epicerie Villardin, av.Villardin 8a, 1009 Pully, tel. 021 728 2893. they are opened until 7pm 7 days a week (which is extremely convenient for somebody who work). They also sell other stuff (italian, marrocan) as well as vegetables and fruits.

Ahoj! For the moment it is difficult to get Slovak bryndza, due to logistics reasons. But you can find very similar products called "brânză de burduf" in the shop "La Perla" at Carouge GE, it's closer to you than Bern, but not open on Sundays.

While the Tsarina-Shop in Zürich-Seefeld apparently has totally disappeared. Really regrettable ! This a few years after the nice Wolga-Restaurent (Russian-Uzbek) in Zollikon went out of business.

I guess Tsarina a bit exaggerated with pricing that was not affordable for many customers. Russian Shop in Bern and La Perla in Geneva have much more reasonable prices and larger choice of products. I hope they will be more successful.

Now you can find "Brânza de burduf" from Romania, similar to Slovak "bryndza", as well as Hungarian "parenyica" similar to Slovak "parenica" not only at "La Perla" in Carouge but also at "Russian Shop" in Bern.
