A quest for russian-style gherkins

I'm looking for russian-style sour gherkins, preferably somewhere close to Basel, but I'm willing to travel for them. I'm not talking about the standard gherkins made with vinegar, but the one prepared with lactic acid bacteria (like sauerkraut). They are heavenly with smetana and honey, so while I'm at it, would someone know a russian shop in Basel area where I could get smetana?

Don't know about the gherkins, but smetana is just standard sour cream, no? Sauerrahm I recall....

Re: A quest for russian-style gherkins

There is a Russian shop in Rheinfelden (Germany) www.city-markt.de, which is very close to Basel. I know the Russians from Basel go there, but I have never been.

The shop I go to is also in Germany, in Waldshut-Tingen, which is about 20mins drive from Baden www.mix-markt.de.
I could recommend the products by Monolith under the brand of "Погребок" (a cellar). If you need the address, I can look it up - could not find it on their website.
You should be able to get smetana in those shops as well.

Best,

Thank you, however on their website, they mention that they are open until 12 February 2011. Are they still open?

That closing date was for the store in Weil am Rhein, which has now moved to Lörrach and where it is now open I believe.

Thanks Quark, you are right of course - this is what they are saying on their German site. The Russian message is confusing though.

Re: A quest for russian-style gherkins

In case anyone is still looking, there's a guy at Oerlikon market on Saturday selling gherkins from a Barrel. They're almost exactly right, but to me not quite.

Otherwise, there's a Russian food shop in Singen, near Schaffhausen.
