You can find sumac at the large Turkish store on Josefstrasse (near the Mexican store)

Re: Where can I buy sumac in Zurich?

i have also seen in at the Turkish store in Oerlikon -- which has really inexpensive and fabulous kalamata olives if you are there... Sorry, I was looking for the name/address but my google map does have a street name. It's off a side street between Sterner Oerlikon and the Bahnhof but on the other side and not the market side (when the market is on). He usually has a bit of veggies out front.

Yes, I have this and use it for sumac because it's got loads in, it's like sucking on lemon rind....sort of. I believe sumac is called essigbaum here.

Barkat has it.
If not in stock, they order it for you.

Yes, kebabs! Give me a few more days as it's on the list for dinners this week. I do have a recipe now but it's always nicer if I can post it with pics! This particular one was emailed to me by my mum. My dad is Persian (mum English) and I grew up with a crazy mix of Persian dishes and stuff like cottage pie. ;p I'm actually not a big fan of Persian food overall but the kebabs my parents would make are so lush. Don't hold me to it but I think this one is from their old cookbook called 'Food of Life'.

Thanks again to everyone for the tips. Even though it seems as though supermarkets don't have a big selection of foods, the trick here I find is to search for small, specialized shops. If you do that, you've got a world of food at your doorstep. =D

Re: Where can I buy sumac in Zurich?

Thanks Shabar. My sister, who is writing her first cook book, is a devoted fan of Ottolenghi but she is vegetarian.

So nice to see a recommendation of one of his non-veg recipes. I shall try it out asap.

Re: Where can I buy sumac in Zurich?

Globus in the Bahnhofstrasse also has it - though blander than the real thing.

Here is another recipe with sumac, also by Yotam Ottolenghi: lemony chicken and buttermilk soup

You also have a few dishes with sumac on Masterchef Australia: http://www.masterchef.com.au/masterc...ch.htm?q=sumac.

Yma Sumac had an absolutely amazing voice and had a range of about four octaves. That's the only sumac that I know.

I am also a devoted fan of Ottolenghi, but I am biased - my brother is the manager....

One thing that makes me happy about moving to Switzerland is that it moves me closer to London - so i will be able to visit him more often - and of course, enjoy the grate food and atmosphere of the restaurants...

Nice one. I too enjoy the close proximity. While Switzerland does have it's share of restaurants, I don't think it can compare to the variety and authenticity that is available in London. I'm off to London in a month. At which location is your brother the manager? I thought there were about 4 locations, if I'm not mistaken.

Well, actually he is the manager of the whole chain...

If you want to experience a dinning experience and not only the food and atmosphere - you better visit Islington or their new venture @ Soho - NOPI

I didn't have the chance to visit NOPI yet, but i like Islington a lot: grate food, grate alcohol, and grate decoration and atmosphere!

Try a Larger Coop...its should cover most things. I had a similar issue with Millet.

Good luck and enjoy
