Re: in search of good olive oil in Switzerland..

This place sells their own Turkish olive oil out of a little shop near Zurich: http://www.epheser.com/

I got a couple of bottles as a gift and thought it was quite good.

Hi Despoina,

As I see, you're living in Lausanne. There is a Greek guy near Yverdon who imports various things directly from Greece. As you can imagine, his prices are VERY high, but you can find almost everything (including olive oil).

I don't have his details in hand, but I guess I can ask on him, if you're interested.
Also I have seen some olive oil in Coop advertised as "Olive Oil from Kalamata", but I don't know how much ... "Kalamatian" is it actually.

Welcome to Switzerland, by the way, if you're new around.

Hahaha ! If you're referring to our "rep", it's not a matter of posting but "connections" !

I know about these Greek importers, I've found some online, but they seem to sell the most lousy standard "Greek goods", that one can find in practically every touristic restaurant in Greece and also every Greek restaurant in Germany, such as canned "dolmadakia" (stuffed vine leaves) and beans and also some "OK" feta cheese, so I can easily imagine what their olive oil tastes like ! But if you think the one in Yverdon is good, I would definitely try him!!!

I will update about my olive oil research soon!

Hey everyone,

I am an olive oil lover and also hard to satisfy on this matter . You see, in my family we always bought our year's () olive oil directly from the producer (yummy!) and never really liked the bottled ones in the supermarket, which are now in Switzerland the only option. The regular ones I found in Coop and Migros haven't really worked for me, so now I am turning to you! Just name your favourite quality olive oil, regardless of origin, and where you find it! My taste buds would be grateful !
Not the very top oil out there, but ALDI sometimes have a rather decent "Terra di Bari DOP" olive oil in addition to their standard olive oil. Certainly beats Migros and Coop oils hands down.

Re: in search of good olive oil in Switzerland..

How to tell if your olive oil is the real thing

this article from UK, the Guardian newspaper

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandsty...oil-real-thing

had suspected for some years that some oil was being doctored, if nothing else by the difference from what the farmer was receiving to what some sellers were selling at. This was brought to our attention some years ago at Greek Lessons, as the teacher had a brother in Kalamata who sold olives and he quoted the 2 prices, that did not make sense

In Basel the COOP in the Centre of town have some expanded lines. Oddly enough Denner does some fairly interesting lines as well. Peculiar shop, good for booze....

Otherwise Globus or local deli

Re: in search of good olive oil in Switzerland..

Aligro in Chavannes-Renens has a really wide selection of olive oils, usually much more choice than in Coop or Migros. And as it's sold in bulk, it's significantly cheaper than what you get in regular supermarkets.

If you really want that local Mediterranean "hand made" feeling and style, I would recommend you to visit Spanish or Italian Circles. There is one near Crissier, I think the name is Associazione Campana and they sometimes sell fruit and stuff they import directly (I assume). I've seen olive oil in big metal jars over there more than once.

Coop does have good quality bio olive oil from Kalamata. Of course it is expensive, but it is good (my family grows olive trees for a living, by the way).

Re: in search of good olive oil in Switzerland..

A friend of mine produces and imports excellent olive oil from Turkey. Their oil has won several awards.

You can purchase directly from their website:

Enjoy!
