White mold on fruits.

Hi everyone, is there any way to prevent white mold from forming on my fruits so quick? I would buy raspberries/blackberries on Friday, and by Sunday I see mold on them. I store them in the fridge of course.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: White mold on fruits.

I find that any soft fruit from the supermarkets just does not last - you have to eat it very quickly

1) store them somewhere where there's not too much mould around. That is not the fridge, which is usually poorly ventilated, humid and dark - ideal conditions for mould. If you have access to somewhere cool and dry, that's ideal.
2) even if stored properly, berries catch mould incredibly quickly. To prolong their life in your place - but not by more than 2 or 3 days max - , take them out of the pack, put them on a plate or tray in a single layer, indeally not touching each other, to avoid damage to the berries (which is where mould attacks first). Eat immediately any damaged (or "leaky") fruit.

Re: White mold on fruits.

I store them in the fridge in a sealed container and I pop a piece of paper towel in with them. The paper towel absorbs moisture and seems to make them stay fresher longer.

Re: White mold on fruits.

Right after you get them from the store, mix together some vinegar and water (1 part table vinegar or apple cider vinegar.... lemon juice could work in a pinch... to 10 parts water). Rinse the berries in this mixture and then drain them and store them in a new container (plastic bag, covered container, etc.). You shouldn't taste any vinegar taste, but if you're worried, you can do a second rinse in just plain water before storing. The acid in the vinegar should kill any mold spores that exist.

Re: White mold on fruits.

don't know if it works for berries, but I know the veggies I buy at the farmers market last much longer than store bought for about the same price. Also I think the paper towel is useful.
