| | | Affordable Sushi - where ?
Can anyone suggest a place to go to eat GOOD sushi/sashimi, without having to pay such a fortune for it... and without having to get cheaper pre-prepared sushi.
I so miss being able to eat sushi/Sashimi 4 or 5 times a week. Since i've been in Zurich, eating sushi has become a once in a blue moon indulgence.
I had lunch at Globus last week, and paid almost CHF40 for one sushi roll, 2 pieces of salmon, and a water. SERIOUSLY???? I'm still in shock. And the worst part was, it wasn't even that good.
The week before I paid almost as much for 2 little plates of sushi off the sushi train at JOJO's in Bellevue.
I'd just dying for a sushi PIG-OUT, but without having to practically take out a loan to support my sushi/sashimi habit!
Surely there must be SOMEWHERE?????

Welcome to Switzerland, Realm of the High Price... Nothing's inexpensive here, but there are cheap things...
P.S. If you find a 'less expensive' sushi option, post it so others can check it out...

Surely there must be SOMEWHERE????? | | | | | I paid CHF 26 for a decent portion of a mixed platter from Yoojis in Seefeld. I'm not posh and don't know what all the different types are called but there were three bits with the fish on top of the rice, four of bigger rice rolls with fish in the middle and sesame seeds round the outside (two of which were pretty spicy) and three or four of the smaller rolls with the seaweed lining and cucumber core.
It filled me up as a lunch and, although I'm no expert, thought they were pretty good quality-wise.

Negishi in Badenerstrasse have a "Blue Plate Monday" offer, any plate off the belt is 5.50. Haven't tried going in there for the promo but I have been on a regular day and the sushi is quite nice. I think that's about the cheapest I've seen.

Me thinks you should go to Tokio for affordable sushi, return flight and a pig out would be cheaper as a alternative I have got me a Sushi for dummies book.

Frankly, I've never found great sushi here at any price. I prefer to go without than to spend a lot of money (even for "cheap" sushi) for mediocre sushi. This just isn't a seafood country.
I do occasionally buy really fresh fish and make my own sashimi, and I have been meaning to try making sushi sometime, since I can make good rice.

Just over the border in Frenchland almost all tschopping centers have a seafood selection to die for, last week I got me two shrimps, two mutant shrimps the size of a babies leg, they went under the grill with butter cafe du paris, also got me some sea snails and made me sea snail gumbo.
This thread is egging me to try making sushi next.

well... from your info, you have been living in NY for 10 years... there is nothing here that can compare with the quality of sushi in NY. its next to the Ocean and there you have a good large amount of Japanese population and you find one sushi bar in every street..
I gave up eating sushi in restaurants here.. everytime when someone told me that "i've heard xxxx restaurant has decent sushi" , i ended up disappointed and sad that i had to pay so much for such crappy sushi especially i felt like i was like eating rice instead of eating sushi.. the rice and fish proportion is just so wrong.. sushi isnt just rice ..
So i just stick with making them at home.. and im happy with that
let me know if you need help with ingredients

The sushi scene in Zürich is awful. Havent found a place where I keep going back without paying an arm and leg.
I find it very useful to buy the sashimi from the Globus fish counters. I am a sucker for sashimi and that usually contributes to the main part of my bill. So I'll get them to cut up the salmon/tuna (approx 18-22 CHF for 300g), buy their near-decent sushi (6 pieces range from 15CHf - 18CHF) pieces in the box, and a packet of miso soup from their Japanese counter, go home and pig out.
All for less than 50CHF per pax. Not ideal but definitely better than paying almost 100chuffs at a restaurant.
If you are interested in gorging, Kai Restuarant in Oerlikon does a "all you can eat sushi" for 59CHF per pax every Saturday: http://www.kaibar.ch/index.php?id=15
Again - not the best sushi I've had but definitely satisfies the craving.

I must say that I actually like Yoojis - but they raised the prices last year quite excessively... to the point that I suddenly don't feel so hungry anymore.
But you know: There are cost efficient alternatives pretty much everywhere accross the border. I had sushi in the Lago center in Konstanz. Pricy for German standards, cheap for Swiss ones. The sushi belt at Fuya in Waldshut looked also very good (and decently priced) but I went for some hot dishes instead. The place is literally a hop over the border. ( http://www.fuya-waldshut.de/)
The absolute best is of course a weekend trip to Düsseldorf. A not so well known fact is that basically all Japanese companies have their EU center there... so the Japanese restaurants are the best in Europe (and so far even better than the ones I have been to in Asia outside of Japan!) My favourite: http://www.maruyasu.de/Speisekarte.pdf
(Look at those EUR prices!!!)

I also often get some frozen stuff like tobiko , urchin, unagi, surimi , amaebi...etc. to make my sushi, maki rolls- in a Japanese store near tram stop Guggastrasse (no. 7/11/14/15) . Yeh they are frozen stuff and they travelled all the way from Japan... probably not that great and fresh. But thats the best & closest thing I could get here.. and they're actually not that bad, just a bit pricey..

I agree with some people here.
For good and affordable sushi, cross the border.
I have tried 3 different places in Konstanz.
This is by far the best one: http://www.sushibartatsumi.de/
But, the place is usually very crowded (which is a good sign) and so it is best to reserve a table the day before you go.
Also, it is not in downtown Konstanz.
I have lived in California and Singapore previously and this place is quite good compared to the sushi places that I've been to (not great, but a solid "good").
The other two, one in Lago and another nearby Lago "Bo Da Tei", are below average by my standard. Not worth the money.
I went to Bo Da Tei based on a suggestion here, and I did not find the sushi any good.

Recently tried this place in Wipikingen as they did a deal via Groupon: http://www.ototo.ch/#home.html
Had the Sushi Hime platter and thoroughly enjoyed it. A lot better than the Sushi I'd tried up til now in Zurich at all the other usual suspects (Globus, Picnic etc..)
