Rice flour

Does anyone know where to buy rice flour in Bern? I asked for it in my local Coop, but was told it wasn't stocked. I'm wanting to make shortbread for Christmas. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hello there, if you still have no luck buying pre-packaged rice flour, go to any reformhaus, buy some white rice and get them to grind it into flour for you.
Yes, you do need to buy the rice from them, slightly more expensive, but not prohibitvely so.

Edited to add:
Alternatively, you could substitute the rice flour for cornflour...
As it's coming Christmas, I'm feeling seasonably charitable and will share with you my Scottish Grandfathers shortbread recipe.

Grandad Jocks' Shortbread. ( Jock bless his soul, was a fantastic hobby cook )

250 gm Butter 175 gm Icing sugar

325 gm plain white flour 75 gm cornflour

Beat butter and sugar till creamy and light, add sifted flours, knead in well.

Roll out, prick all over with fork.

Bake slowly till lightly brown in low oven = 150°

As soon as you take it out of the oven, sprinkle with sugar and cut into squares immediately.

Should have in in stock, or be able to order it on very short notice.

Or course, it will be somewhat pricey...

Re: Rice flour

Hey Amy,

I buy mine from the Aggarwal shop in Zürich and they also have a branch in Bern. I'm sure you'll find it there:

Re: Rice flour

Hi Amy
your local Drogerie - Pharmacy will stock Bimbosan Rice Flour,
its extra fine, and costs about Sfr8, a bag.

Though I use Maizena in my Shortbread as well.

Re: Rice flour

Dirt cheap in almost any Asian shop. You just inspired me to make lemon rind shortbread - a great way to finish off that old jar of rice flour on the windowsill.
