Hi everyone, does anyone know a place where I can get a big order for meat including lamb at a reasonable price? Or would it be only in Germany? Lidl and Aldi won't do unfortunately as we would need fresh meat. Thank you in advance.

Not sure how far you are willing to travel but I highly recommend Familie Fiechter. I included the details below in a turkey thread. I've also ordered beef, lamb, duck, veal and sausages from them. The quality is fantastic.

If you order from Germany, be aware that there's a huge amount of duty to pay on anything you bring into the country. 20CHF/kg if I remember correctly.

Manor has always been able to get anything I've needed, including turkeys and other fowl, and whole baby pigs, goats, and lambs.

there is a butcher in Zurich selling meat at a very reasonable price, even pigs for roasts and entire lambs available. would have to look up the name though if you are interested.

you're only allowed to bring a few 100 grams of meat across the boarder, for all exceeding quantities you pay so much it is not worth buying in Germany anymore (plus the quality is usually better in Switzerland according to my experience)

I go to EGE Grocers in Josefstrasse, Zurich. They are a turkish grocery with a butcher up the back of the shop. Lamb legs 24chf per kilo (a leg of lamb is about 2 kg and they will cut it into sections to fit in your oven). Lamb shanks 17chf per kilo. Other cuts of lamb - all your basics and if you can explain in German they can do things to order (we were in there the other day and they had whole turkeys and my friend asked them to cut a whole one in half so she could cook the two halves separately - no problem!)...

I'm sure there are 'wholesale' butchers and I know you can get bulk at the abbatoir outside Zurich. The problem is, where are you going to store it once you bring it home ? I have a small freezer plus a medium sized swiss fridge...

No, but if you're caught with undeclared items, the fine can be 4x the amount normally due, so CHF 80/kg!

And you'll find you'll be stopped more frequently after being caught once.

i find you are less likley to get stopped on the main highway border than a regional one... especially with non regional plates.

my car is ZH and i get stopped nearly every time going thru the small weil am rhine borders. I have never been stopped on the main highway border with ZH plates.
