Yes of course.. Thooosands of restos, even deep fried in batter in the fish and chip shop.

It is indeed special.. But think of it a bit like a sausage.. There are many many different qualities available. From stuff in a tin that last for years to expensive fresh stuff from the butcher, wrapped in plastic or wrapped in a fresh sheep stomach.

My expert observation is that the really cheap stuff has very little lungs/heart/liver/esophagus etc.. So it's maybe a little more easy for the novice to enjoy.
Go up the price levels to high quality hand made butcher stuff, you can more appreciate the taste of windpipe

MacSween is a popular supermarket brand, start there, they even make a vegetarian version which is lovely :-/
Especially the wind pipe and the renal artery goes down a treat as well

Well, in Southern Germany we have a dish called "Saumagen", which is similar.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saumagen

But obviously, it contains less offal (depending on what actually is in the sausage meat...)
I think my grandfather loved it, but my mother only made it once or twice - the cleansing of the stomach is, well nothing for a weak stomach ;-)

Outside of the the Pfalz, it can hardly be found on the menus of restaurants.

Sorry my bad .. MacSween is Scottish supermarkets, forgetting where i was there..

This is equivalent and available here.

Comes out of the tin with a nice Phoooop sound but cooks up just fine.

You all know what's in it, don't you ? For anyone who is desperate to eat sawdust and offal, there is always Mc Xxxxxx (not Pherson or Tavish)
It depends which butchers' you use.

Re: Where can I buy haggis in Switzerland?

In the Migros they serve things called Atriaux. Which are basically some sort of sausage gut filled with the same sort of stuff as haggis. But a bit more liver tasting than haggis. I cook them like beef olives, lots of veg and gravy.

Obviously, not the same as McSweens!! Which was within walking distance of my flat, years ago, in Edinburgh.

Is the shop still in Grange Canal?

Re: Where can I buy haggis in Switzerland?

Update - I am one happy haggis owner. Ordered from myexpat shop by web. The email communication with them was rapid and easy - they even let me choose the day of posting so as to be sure I would be in when it arrived. It arrived in a insulating box with a still frozen cool block inside. All in all, very, very impressed by expat shop.

Looking forward to eating it now
