| | | Velveeta?
In the land of cheese this is downright blasphemy, I know, but my kids are BEGGING me for an old favorite recipe I used to make back in the U.S. By way of pitiful explanation I am from the South, where Velveeta cheese and canned condensed soups are still mainstays of cooking. The recipe they are wanting includes a generous amount of Velveeta cheese (processed block cheese). Now, before you all crucify me in the court of public opinion, please realize I am simply trying to bring some comfort to my children. So, the question is - is there a Velveeta equivalent here in CH? I have seen cheese 'singles' as in Kraft singles at Lidl but not seen the block cheese like Velveeta. Any help is appreciated.

Near the long life milk, at eye level, in the Coop, are the round boxes of 6 individual portions of this type of processed cheese. It is messy unwrapping them, but it will keep them quiet, and their little fingers are well suited to this task.

I am actually a health and fitness nut and therefore pretty out of place in the southeastern part of the U.S. I don't eat Velveeta but my kids love it and god love 'em they are being such troopers throughout all of this upheaval in their little lives - if I could give them this, I would feel like I am giving them a little piece of home (even though it isn't the healthiest).

There are various soft squidgy cheesy products but none quite the same flavor or color as Velveeta. If you look for something called "Bel Paese", that's about the closest. Comes in little round packages with green writing and a map of Italy on the top, and like Velveeta it won't be in the refrigerator case (try near the coffee creamer normally.)
If that doesn't cut it, I think some of the mail-order American food shops stock Velveeta. Do an "advanced search" on here, I'm sure it's been discussed before.

I tend to use American Food Avenue if there's something I simply "must" have, the prices tend to be a bit better, although, to be honest, I'm not sure if the difference comes out in shipping costs. (Somehow, just seeing that one place charges over 9chf and the other not even 5 makes up my mind without looking further. )
American Food Ave also has Ro*Tel, I'm feeling a taste for some hot cheese dip coming on. As a "nod" toward healthier eating though, maybe I'll use celery sticks for dipping.. although that's a bit like having a diet coke with your Big Mac, isn't it? | | The following 3 users would like to thank Peg A for this useful post:

The English Orell Fussli on the Bahnhofstrasse has a variety of American/British processed foods like cake mix, boxes of macaroni and cheese, etc. I don't remember seeing Velveeta, but it's worth a shot. Be prepared to pay double (at least) for it though...

| | | Re: Velveeta? Here is a homemade Velveeta cheese recipe.
I have not tried it, but it appears to be well-reviewed.
Googling "Velveeta Recipe" will yield other recipes; they appear to mostly be similar in requiring cheddar, powdered milk, boiling water, and gelatine (don't think about it too much; at least you can avoid the preservatives and artificial coloring!).
Please let me know how it turns out if you try it as, like Peg A, I am craving some Rotel Cheese Dip and I have the Rotel tomatoes but not the Velveeta! | | This user would like to thank Textoch for this useful post:

But it is like Velveeta.... all processed, comes in a box, next to the cheeses. Don't think it tastes like Velveeta, which is American cheese. (American cheese is really just processed -- there's a whole entry on Wikipedia about it)

Also, wikipedia says they sell it in Germany. Anyone close to Germany wanna have a look? | Quote: | | | | | I tend to use American Food Avenue if there's something I simply "must" have, the prices tend to be a bit better, although, to be honest, I'm not sure if the difference comes out in shipping costs. But this place has Velveeta!

Also, as I've become a fan of "do it yourself" here (import prices for things I technically can make myself... ), perhaps this copycat recipe will be of use? RoTel Copycat | | This user would like to thank Peg A for this useful post:
