Potatoes - where can I buy red ones?

Has anyone seen red potatoes on sale here in the supermarkets or smaller shops here in Zürich? I've tried looking for them in the Migros at Glatt yesterday, as well as Coop but no joy.

The only place I've seen it is Leshop online so far but I dont believe that there arent any red potatoes on sale here in the shops for the whole of Zürich! Appreciate any leads.

Thanks!

Re: Potatos

i got some from the Oerlikon market on Saturaday. I usually get my veg from the stall by the Lidi. Or I think I saw them at the big Coop by Marriett in Oerlikon.

Re: Potatos

They sell red potatoes in Scotland, and the natives swear by them: but in 22 years here I have never, ever, seen red potatoes. Blue potatoes and green tinged ones but never red ones.

In the Coop potato section there are wrapped bags of 1 kg potatoes, on the packet is the name of the variety and a description of the method of cooking recommended for that variety.

I would suggest you visit the Coop armed with the foreign words you need, and maybe you can find a good alternative.

Re: Potatos

I don't remember seeing red potatoes specifically. I did see small purple and white Peruvian potatoes at the Manor. I just made a metal note about it. But again didn't register if there were red ones too.

Yes. They sell red potatoes here in season. They are new potatoes so I think the local ones come in early May/June-ish.

Re: Potatos

I have seen and purchased red Romanos (not Desiré, though) before, but it's pot luck as to where and when, but, if I recall, it was after they had been freshly harvested, towards the end of the summer.

Re: Potatos

Oh God a potatoe thread. Don't get me started on spuds. Spuds here are crap, end of. Maybe folks eat pasta but spuds are not top of the menu.
Buy a bag from Migros - no idea of variety , plus 1 or 2 old ones thrown in that last exactly the time it takes you to get home. Threw some away today that smelled of god knows what .
I long for spring new potatoes from Jersey, the little earthy tasting ones. Oh God another week here befor I go to Spain.

Re: Potatos

I bought some recently from Migros, they were wonderful big ones called Laura. They were classified as especially suitable for mashing and soup.

It also said for Gratin, but I prefer a waxy type of potato for that. I made leek and potato soup from them and they were just right.

I have seen Desiré potatoes sold here as well, maybe it depends on the growing area.

Re: Potatos

I've seen some red here (at one of my local Coop locations) later in the spring / early summer, they also happened to have some blue potatoes at the time. I used the opportunity to make Red White and Blue potato salad for July 4th.

I've also picked up some baby red and white at Geant Casino (not sure of spelling) in France which I used simply quartered for my "Sunday Roast", they were really nice. Unfortunately, not so convenient to get to France from Zürich, just for potatoes.
