| | | Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores | Quote: | | | | | I've run out of chickpea flour & asafoetida (both of which I've always got when over in the UK until now).
Does anyone know - definetively - where I can get some in Zurich?
(No joy at Barkat or the one on Langstr. next door to Casablanca) | | | | | I bought chickpea flour two weeks ago in a shop called New Asia Market on Feldstrasse right by Kalkbreite tram stop.

| | | Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores | Quote: | | | | | Aggarwal's have moved. He told me once that the new place is around the cnr on Kernstrasse and someone else said that it's a really big place.
So their main grocery section isn't on Langstr anymore, but you could go there to ask for directions.
Unless someone here has their new address? | | | | | Yes you are right. I went by there this afternoon. The old place on Langstrasse 62 has become a takeaway and the new place is 2 minutes walk on Kernstrasse 27. It's a bigger, cleaner and well served store.
I only went looking for stewing lamb and came out with 2 grocery bags packed full. Fresh vegetables, meats, fish, spices, starches, pickles, ready made foods, etc... they've got a lot of stuff.
Here's a good tip: there's a brand of ready made curries called `Haldiram's Minute Khana.` on sale at Aggarwals. There are about 5 or 6 different varieties of these ready made veg curries which taste as good if not better than the real thing. Here's a link to a pic of the products: http://www.indianblend.com/site/664954/product/RTE-19
When I can't be bothered with cooking, I open up a packet of these, reheat for 2 minutes and have a delicious dinner. Enjoy currying!

hello there,
I think it will be a very good idea. I have also been thinking about having an indian store with some jewellery and handicrafts from India. A store where the moment one enters , it will remind them of India. Do let me know if you need a hand in setting up things. I have been asking since a while if someone would be interested in setting up something.
take care | Quote: | | | | | Hi i am thinking of starting a Supermarket near bern of anything and everything for a Indian grocery all vegetarian items from all over the world.
Ill also have a restaurant there adjcent to the store and hotel to stay above the shop and restaurant.
It will be wholesale and retail as well we have also planned to do order by website and we deliver.
The samosas and snacks we will supply from the store are also available in supermarkets in London.
Can you please let me know your veiws if there is a need for such a store or not.
Thank you

The thing is you can't use just any sort of grape leaves...they should have a certain texture.
By the way @kdelval,
What do you cook with grape leaves? Greek speciality - Stuffed grape leaves? I love 'em.. |

My Yiayia (grandmother) always said that they need to be the wild ones. I just don't see wild ones around here. Yes, for dolmades.

Just found an online Indian store called Little India http://www.little-india.ch/shop/index.php
Selection seems good, prices seem reasonable, and the delivery charge isn't too bad either. I imagine it would be very useful for people who live in the middle of nowhere or have no ethnic shops around. | | This user would like to thank Richdog for this useful post: | |

What determines if a store is ethnic? Doesn't everyone come from a their own ethnicity(s). If it was a store featuring UK,or Norwegian products would that still be considered an ethnic store?

I went to aggrawal which is an Indian store just off of Claraplatz in Basel, it is great! They also have Mexican food and ingredients and the service is superb...I loved the ready made Chapatti as well (in a bag) just looking forward to making my own as well.
