Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

Hi Guys, I have just joind this forum. I am visiting Switzerland in July and planing to stay a week in Lausanne and a week in Interlaken. Can someone advise if there are any restrictions on bringing food items into Switzerland and if not, what quantities can I bring in. Also if one can advise the Indian/Pakistani grocery stores in both the cities and items like basmati rice and different daals, cooking oil are available there. Thanks in advance

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

In Zug there are two Asian shops. One is on Baararstrasse behind Macdonalds and the COOP petrol station and the other is on Industristrasse beside Metalli. The first has a great selection of dried and frozen food although the shop reeks of dried fish and the owner is a bit miz. The second sells stuff that isn't just Indian/Pakistani/Sri Lankan, more of a mixture, also clothing in the second one in case anybody feels the need for a Kurta suit. The prices are ridiculously low compared to supermarkets, particularly for rice and curry pastes and they have a better selection of pickles.

There is an Asian market in Luzern on Hirschengraben, about one block from the Nespresso store, by the University.
As far as Lausanne is concerned, my knowledge is out of date - I use an Indian shop in Vevey which is 15 minutes east of Lausanne. I used to use an Indian shop on the Avenue de Tivoli, close to the Clinique Cecil, but I'm sure there are current Lausanne-dwellers who can give you more recent info.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

I tried the one at Metalli yesterday and was pleasently surprised by the selection and the prices. They even had 300 PG Tips on sale for CHF22 which is a bargain.

Re: Asian grocery stores between Lausanne - Geneva?

Hi
I have read about the asian supermarkets in Zurich etc. Is anyone aware of any between Lausanne to Geneva? I miss the chinese vegetables and would like to get some. I was told it is very difficult to find any around Nyon or Gland. Any advice will be much appreciated!

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

Thanks everyone for this thread (and Nanda for starting it!)

I finally found all of my spices an curry pastes I had been missing! New Asian Market on Feldstrasse in Zurich was great and very reasonably priced. It had such a great selection (same range as back home in Australia, which I really hadn't expected!) so we stocked up. We also stumbled upon Aargwals Indian which had very yummy samosas that we couldnt resist!

So just a general thanks and another recommendation to any other newbies who may be looking for the same things

Dear Friends,

Does anyone know where can I buy the above item?

I went to some Indian stores but no luck so far.

Thanks!

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

This thread is really nice!

I was just wondering if any of the shops sell Indian Rice.. I have see Thai rice at the Asiatische lebensmittel shop near Berninaplatz... but, unless I can't get Indian rice, I may not buy it... It costs about 13.3 CHF per 5 kg.

Thanks

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

I've been able to get basmati even in the non-indian shops, like the thai/chinese grocery shops.

So try the ones near you. But for a range of indian rice - Aggarwal's on Langstrasse (list in numerous lists above) is the place to go to.

Though I doubt they're cheapest. There are many indian/pakistani/bangladeshi shops around langstrasse (quite a few along Quellenstrasse - have a look again at the lists above) - all within medium-walking distance, so you could spend some time doing price-checks if you like

BTW - if you do, put the results up here .....

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

barkat, SKT and Agrawals used to sell indian Rice. But after the indian gov banned rice exports it is har to find(i have not checked agrawals after that). if you are from southern part of india you find a rice called ponni in SKT.

There is also a place in orlikon. it is known as the asian goodwil stor. bang opposite to Krisburo. you need to take bus 62 and it is the second stop. you can find some rice there too...

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

SK trading... not sure of SK ... you have quite a few shops by them like a gold shop, a hotel, srilankan clothes next to each other...etc...
