Aggarwal's Mirch Masala AG

Kernstrasse 27
8004 Zürich

I think already mentioned, but not with the address. On the corner of Kernstr. and Anwandstr.

A large shop, also with many of the ingredients you would need for cooking Thai as well as Indian. I know Thai people who shop there both for the ingredients and the price. Never again go to Migros, Co-op or Denner for limes, soy sauce, rice, coriander, shalottes, mango, black pepper corns, chillies, ...

Many varieties of rice in different quantities. For a 5Kg bag, expect to pay around CHF 2.
You mean about CHF 2 per kg? I usually buy India Gate Basmati Rice @ ~3.5 CHF / kg

I've been to this Agarwal and I like it much better than the one on Langstrasse...

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

I ran into this place yesterday at the Wednesday market in Hauptbahnhof:

http://www.poushe.ch/

They only sell strudel at the market but apparently have a cafe and catering business so might be able to help you out.

Thanks

What kind of roti? 'Roti' is a Malay or Tamil word for bread in general, I believe.

Hotwok in Regensdorf serves Roti Canai and Murtabak.

You can make your own Roti Canai (Chennai) too. PM me if you want the recipe.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

Roti Canai is also known as pratha (sp). So you might want to check it out at Asian grocery stores. They usually come frozen.

I want the carribean type of Roti - which is like wrap and inside is chick peas, potates, spinach, etc.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

It depends from which culture u want ur roti from?

The Caribbean one resembles and is known as a 'parotha', cooked on a griddle with oil or ghee, stuffed with spiced potato curry and / or meat, chicken or fish curry. Very easy to prepare.

The Indian one is known as a 'fulka' or 'chapati' or 'roti'. Cooked dry with no oil or butter.

As suggested earlier, check out the frozen section of ur ethnic grocer and u will find them there OR order them from ur local Indian restaurant.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

Just got back from Lian Hua at Berninaplatz. There is another branch near Bhf Wiedikon. In fact, they're connected by the No. 14 Tram.

Hi I wish to know more about this shop, please- More info will be really appreciated. =)
My GF thinks

Aggarwal's Mirch Masala AG
Kernstrasse 27
8004 Zürich

is cheaper for rice, even with the 15% discount. Today was CHF 12.00 for 5kg Angel Thai jasmine rice. But she's not been here since the end of September 2008, so that might not be true any more.

Lian Hui would hold it's own with a few shop in London's China town. Loads of different types of noodles, and bamboo shoots canned in different ways. Today we picked up the "normal" sort, vacuum packed. Also canned fruits and vegetables. Different brands of soy sauce, vinegar, chilli sauce, etc.

Another thing is Lian Hua has discounts on every saturday. Havent been there yet, but have heard LOADS about it. =)
It's true. I have today's receipt to prove it. There is a sign on the door stating there is a 15% discount every Saturday.

I didn't spot the opening hours, but it is open at least until 6pm on Saturday. The other branch near Bahnhof Wiedikon is open until 19:00 on Saturday.

If you're cost conscious, I'd suggest splitting your shop between Aggarwal and Lian Hui. Availability of fresh produce varies from time to time, but there is overlap between the two shops.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

Just to let everyone know I'm going to do another 'shopping tour' on Saturday 2nd May - meet 10am Hauptbahnhof Zurich - Treffpunkt...find it on the social calendar.

Same as last month...but this time we might plan to finish at Aggarwal's take-away (hoping it's finished by then) for some lunch...

I actually made the effort to check out the Rapperswil Asian Store...and their prices seem steep! I also found their vegetables not fresh.

They have it on the menu at Restaurant Beyond near the main station in Zurich, but everytime I tried to order it, they were out of it :-)). Chester of Muskatnuss may make it for you. Call him. He is very accomadating. Unfortunately he has moved from Zurich to Volketswil.

Restaurant Waldgarten-Muskatnuss
Wangenstrasse
8604 Volketswil/ZH
Tel: 044 945 41 66

http://www.muskatnuss.ch/126/English...ter_Simon.html

Just checked. They do serve roti.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

There is this very nice store in Guggachstrasse, called Aishwariya. Stocks a lot of Indian stuff. It is very close to the tram stops Milchbuck and Guggachstrasse (between them, in fact).

Personally, I really like the shop and quite recommend it!
