Just want to add 2 Asian supermarkets to the list in Oerlikon

First one is right next to Berninaplatz tram stop, on the No. 14 and No.10 trams, sorry don't have the exact address but you can't miss it.

The other is at Bahnhof Oerlikon, coming out of the south exit, directly opposite.

Both have a good supply of fresh ingredients and I use them both regular.

Nicky
Theres another asian store named "Asiaway " on the swamandinger str. near sternen oerlikon has a good supply of chinese as well as indian grocery .

Bus No 62 goes there ,have to get down at dorflinde and walk back towards sternen oerlikon.

Worth a visit!

Yes - many of these are close to the main train station, on and around Langstrasse. You might be interested in joining Swisspea's "Foods of the world tour" on June 27th, where she can show you many different shops.

Re: Any Exotic food shops in Zurich?

Yup, come for the tour...

However, I haven't seen good and cheap mangoes at all yet...good, expensive ones (6chf each) and cheap not so great ones...down as low as 2chf each...

For fresh fruit and veg I quite like the fruit market at Hottingerplatz (near the tram stop)...also try Burkliplatz or Helvetiaplatz markets...Tues and Fri mornings.

I haven't been here long enough to know what foods are seasonal or when you will find them in abundance - definitely there is more watermelon now than there was in the winter time, and I've only just seen rockmelons (canteloupe) in the shops in the past month...

Enjoy!

Re: Any Exotic food shops in Zurich?

There is an Indian / African place near Altstetten station (on Hohlstrasse) - tram 31 from Zurich Bahnhof (200M before the railway station) - which will probably satisfy your needs. They also do some strange fish there - fresh off the plane. Also just next to Oerlikon railway station is a big Asian supermarket.
Sometimes the price is not so important . it is more a matter of what you want and where you can get it.
But there are so many places in Kreis 4 (Langstrasse within 2 minutes of each other) as the previous poster said - should not be a problem to find what you are looking for.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

This is another reminder if anyone wants to join the shopping tour this Saturday - check the forum calendar.

Foods of the World - Shopping Tour Zurich

Also, I can highly recommend Barkat Cash n Carry, which is right near Schmiede Wiedikon, Birmensdorferstrasse 143, 8003.

You can buy lots of essential stuff - Indian, Thai, and other oriental foods, and in bulk. The fruit and vegetables looked really really good on Wednesday, and the prices looked better than what I have seen around - they had really big watermelons for 90rp a kilo - only problem was I didn't think I could handle carrying a 5kg watermelon across town on the bus.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

Bumping this thread for our next shopping tour - Saturday 28th August.

Hope to see you there - also the 'India' festival is on at the Hauptbahnhof that day - a good opportunity to enjoy some Indian style fast-food and maybe pick up a few trinkets...

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

I've run out of chickpea flour & asafoetida (both of which I've always got when over in the UK until now).
Does anyone know - definetively - where I can get some in Zurich?

(No joy at Barkat or the one on Langstr. next door to Casablanca)

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

You should try the shop Aishwariya -- near Milchbuck/Guggachstrasse. They usually stock Asafoetida (and possibly Chickpea flour although I am not sure). However, they are in the process of selling the shop. So, unless you go there today, or possibly on Monday, you might not get it. You might also want to try SKT (Quellenstr 1).

No - was there today - that's the one I meant on Langstr. in my post.
They seem to have massively cut back on their stock recently, prefereing to do more hot food etc.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

Aggarwal's have moved. He told me once that the new place is around the cnr on Kernstrasse and someone else said that it's a really big place.

So their main grocery section isn't on Langstr anymore, but you could go there to ask for directions.

Unless someone here has their new address?

Are you sure? The one I mentioned is not on Langstr. It's behind Langstr.

Hello NBP

Hope you would have bought asafoetida. But then I thought of adding quickly that you should specifically ask for it in the cash counter in SKT.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

For anyone in Morges or Vaud area a new Asian foods shop called Ly Thanh has just opened up in rue des Charpentiers in Morges, near the main post office. Surprisingly cheap and has a wonderful selection of fresh produce. Has quickly become part of my weekly shop!
