Bulk dried fruit?

It's christmas pud making time, but I can only find dried fruit in tiny little packets in the supermarkets I've looked in (Migros, Carrefour, Champion). Do they have shops here with bins of fruit and nuts, where you can fill up bags with whatever amount you need?

Thanks,
Carol

Seen as how I always nick a handful as I pass by said stalls, I can say with assurance that these do, indeed, exist.

Re: Bulk dried fruit?

I have seen baskets of dried fruit at a couple of Coop(in Zurich though) where you can pick as much as you like. They are at the same racks where you find fruits and veggies..

Re: Bulk dried fruit?

a reformhaus ( healthfood store) would be your best bet to get them in a very good quality and a sort of pick-n-mix counter

Prodega/CC has bulk stuff, but you'd need to be a member (or know somebody who is) to buy there...

Re: Bulk dried fruit?

You can tell its christmas time - I have just run into the same problem. Apart from there being little distinction between currants, raisins and sultanas, I am really stuck for glazed cherries. Coop only sell them in small packets with nine to a packet. It costs a fortune when you have a few 'practise runs' at making the Christmas cake.

Any suggestions for bulk glazed cherries?

Re: Bulk dried fruit?

Migros sells candied cherries in 100 gram-ish portions here.

Not cheap, but flexibility and choice is offered at the colonial goods store Schwarzenbach in Zurich near the Tram stop Rathaus. I've been there this week for the first time and now I'd like to test all their coffee compositions and delicatessen... They sell both dried and candied fruits.

Re: Bulk dried fruit?

Thanks Nathu, Coop is 100g as well. I was thinking more along the lines of 500g boxes from ASDA....

I am loath to get them posted over, so its time to go and have a look around. St. Gallen is great for a lot of ethnic foods, but cherries obviously don't come into this category!
