That is an English muffin sliced in half!!!!!!
I think that's what confused me at first too. But the crumpet isn't cut in half. That's the way it's cooked. Anyway, the texture is different. It's more like a thick pancake/blini then an "English muffin".

Re: Muffins vs. Cupcakes

I can't believe I missed this thread the first time round. Here's a nice, short video that helps explain the difference. They're very similar but produced using different methods (creaming vs wet-dry).

My cupcakes are exactly the same recipe as my cakes - the only difference is whether I use the cake pan or the cupcake molds.

Both muffins and cup cakes are so passé.
I understand from my d-in-law that the latest craze is Whoopie pies. As seen on CSI or somesuch american programme.
I expect Switzerland will catch up in about five years or so.

I'm sticking with fairy cakes and crumpets!
And right you were - here we are almost 3 years later and LIDL is selling ready made mixtures for Whoopie pies but they are so yesteryear, the hottest craze is cake pops.

And cake pops have been around in the UK for several years as well!
