Nuts and seeds?

Where is the best place to buy nuts and seeds? I can get a bag of mixed nuts from our local Coop for about CHF 3.50, but it is a measly little bag and wont last long. And there arent any seeds, thinking sunflower/sesame and so on.

Im looking to stock up for 3/4 months worth, so any tips appreciated on places with good selection for a reasonable price in the Zurich region. Would consider popping into Konstanz as part of a regular visit.

Cheers

Re: Nuts and seeds?

Try the Turkish markets as they have good selection of different nuts/seeds in packs. TADIM is a good brand I'm happy to eat, they stay fresh long as the packing is good.. We almost get close to finish the whole pack each time..

Maybe you couldn't find the seeds because they are in different aisles from the nuts?

I normally see seeds (Sonnenblumenkerne (sunflower), Kürbiskerne (pumpkin), Sesam (sesame) etc.) together with breakfast cereals, whereas nuts are mostly close to either chocolate and cookies or baking ingredients.
But I think this varies from shop to shop.

That's my experience too. I have various tinfuls of seeds, nuts, dried beans etc that I've bought from the Coop and Migros. If you're a real heavy-duty nut fiend I guess you are better off hunting down a wholesale-type source but otherwise I've found that the big supermarkets have what I need, and their own-label varieties are not too expensive for Switzerland.

As glowjupiter says, you were probably looking in the wrong place.

Re: Nuts and seeds?

Thanks all, I will try some of these suggestions. The Coop I use is only a small one but there is a bigger one up the road. Or maybe I need to look a bit harder.

Have an Aldi down the road here so going to look there as well. The bag I bought on Saturday from Coop was the largest one and is almost finished already.

Re: Nuts and seeds?

Breezy, what did you learn??

I like to roast my own nuts, so I try to find raw nuts in bulk (or as raw as I can find - but they do need to be shelled). The tiny bags at Coop wouldn't last me long. (or my kids, who eat them like candy!) I used to buy large bags in the US at Trader Joes, so I'm a little spoiled in this regard.

If you live in Kaiserstuhl, I'd look over the Rhine for your nuts.

For some reason, they are one of the items with the biggest markup in Switzerland compared to Germany.

So far, I've only visited an Aldi and Landi over the river... I've been wanting to check out the DM in Waldshut. Any other suggestions??? Is there a health store I should know the name of for a visit?? I'm also looking for chia seeds and a few other items that seem to be harder to find here.

Re: Nuts and seeds?

I frequently go to Alnatura in Germany who have a reasonably good selection of nuts and seeds. They have a few branches so check their website for one nearest to you. Some of their products are also sold in DM.
I know it's not quite down the road from you, but if you are in the Rhine center in Weil am Rhein, there's a reformhaus upstairs that sells chia seeds (think about €14 fro 450g). You might some of the other harder to find items here. Although my local health food shop in Reinach sells Chia seeds too and have seen it in several other health food shops in Basel.

Re: Nuts and seeds?

I realize it is slightly off-topic, but I could use some advice on where to get cheap lentils (Basel or in the German side is ok with me) in possibly large quantities?

Maybe I'm wrong, but from past experiences i think shops specializing on natural products or health shops tend to have unappealing prices.

Any Indian supermarket.

Try Aggarwal's on Claragraben (edge of Claraplatz).

Re: Nuts and seeds?

I'd like to pick this thread up again as it's been a few years and availability in Zurich region has improved (e.g. chia seeds at Reformhaus, etc)

I thought I read this past year of a (?) store opening up with the intent of selling nuts, grains, etc loose / in bulk with the hook of saving on packaging. Does anyone have any info on this? I, too, use far more almonds, walnuts, sprouts, seeds than can be afforded buying 250g packs at a time.

Thanks for the input. K

It's a bit early to start feeding the birds .... best to wait until the ground freezes and is covered by snow.
