Re: Burger in Zurich

I was at the Montreux Jazz Festival on Wednesday, and tried a burger from the Holy Cow stand on the lake prominade.

Burger was lovely and a good size (150-175g), perfectly cooked around medium (without asking or being asked - No way you can choose how you like your burger cooked at a big high turnover stand like that which is fair enough - i'd take medium rare otherwise) Tasty cheese, think fondue käse in this festival special I had, topped wth caramalised red onions in a tasty bun.

11chf, or 15 with fries.

Thumbs up, i'll definitley try the branch in Zurich to see what they offer there

Re: Burger in Zurich

now this came as a surprise but the burger Mr. Aleydis had at Odeon this last Saturday was top notch - tasty, with one of the best meat / bread ratios I've ever seen, and plenty of green salad, coleslaw and yummy fries

Re: Burger in Zurich

My favourite pub burger is still the St Joseph on Josephstrasse, a very large homemade patty and loads of filling inc mushrooms but I had a burger at the Oliver Twist during Zurifest and it was excellent, much better than I remembered, have they changed something there?

Last week though I was out late with a friend and got the munchies at midnight. She recommended the Wider bar off Renweg. The fries were good but that was it. They proudly claimed it was made from us beef but was very finely minced and so over cooked, I'm guessing it was fried earlier and warmed in the microwave. And it was 34 chufs!

I'd expect it pre-chewed for my convenience at that price!

In my opinion the best burger is found in Korner (http://www.gourmetburger.ch/)...

Holy Cow seems ok for Swiss standards, but is nothing to write home about IMO. It certainly beats any McDo or BK burger, but there is just something about the taste, which doesn't match.

Re: Burger in Zurich

When Helvti first opened, their burgers were amazing (and by the way, the chef was American). I went back again later and the quality had nose dived. By the way, Helvti is an offshoot of the Helvetia hotel and restaurant across the street, had a burger there with an English friend not long ago and it wasn't bad; not really American style but ok.

Anyway, it is easy to get very good ground beef here, and BBQing is very popular in the summer (it seems to be legal in any park, I've done it in the tiny one next to my house, and some of the bigger parks have public BBQs that usually are already going when you arrive and the people are happy to share when they are done--I recommend the Josefswiese), so make your own. My Swiss friends are amazed that I just buy ground beef and make it with my hands instead of the preformed hamburger patties available at the market (what is up with that really?)

They also think the burgers I made them are the best they every had...so...standards are low.

Iroquois in Seefeld, well, I tried one about 6 years ago, it was edible, but nothing special. But, you know, when in Rome...Rösti is quite nice, I even make it at home (it takes a long time)

Tried that place with a few EFers about 6 months or so ago.

OK, but nothing more than that. Prices seemed pretty average for Zurich (= if you'ere not used to the prices, bloody expensive!). To be honest I'd prefer to go to McDonald's and keep the money for a better place (there's a lunchtime menu with a burger on it at Goodman's - I believe it's good, but have never been).

Lastly I do burgers quite regularly at home (minced beef bound with some egg, then refrigerated; mince from Denner/Co-Op/Migrso, whoever has a promo on + buns from one of those as well).

Seeing this thread I couldn't help but reply, despite the fact that my advice won't be THAT helpful, due to my Suisse-romande locality. However, if you ever visit Lausanne or Geneva you really, really, REALLY should have a burger at 'Holy Cow' (www.holycow.ch). Over here these guys are already legends and they have BY FAR the best burger I ever had anywhere in Europe. They only use swiss first ingredients, swiss beverages and are very careful about their quality and taste. Simply amazing and always packed with people. I hope with the rate these guys are expanding they will soon reach Zurich!
Amazing burgers, they always use fresh Swiss beef and the sauces are made fresh in house, the buns baked fresh daily, and the different burgers are really well conceived for whatever your tastes are. Really good fries, too, thick cut and crispy.

They have been open in Zurich now since a few months, exactly the same burgers and great service as in Geneva and Lausanne. They also have a nice new location in Lausanne on Rue Cheneau-de-Bourg.

Re: Burger in Zurich

...looking at the map (which didn't load properly from their web site, but anyways) it appears they are right next to the last proper red light in the Niederdorf (not long ago a red light district, now one of the fanciest parts of town), so you can enjoy some beef with your beef.

I live just by the Helvti diner but next time I am over that way I will check it out!

Seconded. This place has the best burgers I've had in Zurich so far. Their sauces are rubbish, though.

Re: Burger in Zurich

As a fellow American, I can sympathize. The only thing close to the taste we know and love is a small restaurant called Helveti Diner. Then it needs to be the Angus burger, and of course, it's 45 chf.

The other thing I miss is american pickles, the ones here just aren't the same.
