Scottish Oatcakes in Basel?

Bought some Scottish Oatcakes (from Co-operative) back with me from my last UK visit. I love them.
Does anyone know if there is a source in Basel?

I've seen Nairns Oatcakes in Geant just across the border in France if that's any use to you.

Re: Scottish Oatcakes in Basel?

I think Oatcakes are pretty easy to make yourself, should not be much more than oatmeal, flour, some salt and some fat to bind together

The British Cheese Centre are able to help you via mail order; just ask for what you require and I'm sure GrumpyGrapefruit can help out. I know he supplies Glausi's Käsespezialitäten in Basel.

So I eventually got around to walking from the end of the No. 11 tram to Geant (approx. half an hour) since the weather had improved for the moment. Sure enough after a good bit of searching - didn't know how to say oatcakes in French - found them and bought two boxes for a nice walk back to the No. 3 tram end station (again about half an hour).
Thanks for the head up. Got lazy bones out for a walk as well.

PS Next time I might try Hiebers at the Whylen branch, if I can find it.

Galette d'avoine

Number 38 bus from Wettsteinplatz takes you to directly outside Hiebers in Whylen in about 15 mins. (you need an extra ticket on top of your TNW pass to travel in the German bit ..)

I love Nairns oatcakes which are available in Geant but quite pricey (~4-5 euros per box if I remember right). I haven't found them in Basel yet. However, I recently bought a shed load from Amazon and got them sent to my German PO box , postage was quite cheap so I reckon that's the cheapest way to get your oatcakes in Basel.

Let us know if you find a better alternative.

Re: Scottish Oatcakes in Basel?

In Geant I paid €2.47 per box of Nairn's fine milled oatcakes which is ok.

Re: Scottish Oatcakes in Basel?

There are plenty of recipes available for Oatcakes and if it is Nairn's in particular you like you could try making them yourself;

Nairn's Organic Oatcake Ingredients

Organic wholegrain oats (89%)
Organic sunflower oil
Organic palm fruit oil
Sea salt
Sodium bicarbonate

OK, palm fruit oil is, I grant you, a bit difficult to get hold of for something you might want to whip up on a boring Sunday afternoon, but try experimenting with a combination of Margarine/Butter/Lard.

I balked at the cost of digestives so had a go at baking them myself, you don't normally end up with exactly the same thing because of industrial quantities and processing but you can fiddle with the recipe to get something you might like more.

I think you can find these and all other sorts of British (sorry) foods at Bider and Tanner, which is a library but has even frozen goods

Since my supply from Giant is almost used up I decided it was time to have a walk and find Hiebers.
From the Hörnli-Grenze it's a good half-hour's walk to Hiebers, Grenzach-Whylen but as mentioned above there is a bus.
Once there I found the Oatcakes quiet quickly...they are the Walker brand name at €2.99 a packet. Not tried them yet but I'm sure they will be ok.

PS Though I walked this time Hiebers has a good car park in front of the building. Next time I'll take the wife which means I'll drive there.

PPS. There's also a new discounter across the main road, a Lidl if I remember rightly.

Re: Scottish Oatcakes in Basel?

BTW just on the other side of the Basel/German border from Hörnli I saw a firm that offers a German POB (Postfach) for people in Switzerland who wish to order stuff in Germany and then fetch it and 'smuggle' it yourself across the border. At this site only a couple of minutes from the border you could easily do it by bus, no car needed. I went in and asked for a leaflet.
The details are online.
http://www.grenzpaket.ch

PS I have not personally checked it out, so as they say do your own due diligence.
