Vaguely amusing trend in American beer naming

Funny the things you notice when you are out of a country for a period of time and then go back.

We all know what "IPA" means. Well decent American microbreweries have started marketing such delights as "Belgium IPA" and "English IPA". Good beers so don't let the naming put you off.

What next? Swiss IPA?!?!

PS yes I know IPA is a British creation not Indian

An example how a specific, slowly becomes generic.

Same happened with cheddar cheese - Australian, Canadian, Irish, etc.

The most original and numerous beer names I've come across is from Northumberland Brewery.

..... but a funny tag line is best supported by a pic.

Funny you should mention that... Basel's Unser Bier brewery is making its own IPA, AYPIEY :-)

It's trying to do the American IPA style and for lack of other IPAs in Switz, is pretty decent.

BTW, not sure if I misunderstood you, but by American IPA I understand a very hoppy, crisp and often quite malty brew.

By English IPA, I understand something far more subtly hopped, less malty and often room-temperature.

Both are good.

Can't say I've tried a Belgian IPA, and I know my Belgian beers pretty well...

Re: Vaguely amusing trend in American beer naming

Indian Pale Ale was designed to travel from UK to India, to be drinkable after shipping without cooling. So why can't you have an American IPA ?
