Food you find at the back of your fridge: a Q&A

Like many of you I'm sure, I sometimes find forgotten food at the back of the fridge. I'm not always sure how edible they still are... So I thought we could all chip in on this subject. After all, a lot of food keeps beyond the "Best before" date printed on them.

I'll start with vacuum sealed foie gras bought at Christmas 2011 and that I forgot to take with me to the relatives. I've no idea how well this keeps, having never bought any before then, or since.

Re: Food you find at the back of your fridge: a Q&A

My wife is away, when the cheese went I got stumped, I don't have a clue what the rest of the stuff is…

I'm living off red wine and M&Ms...

For me, if it passes the sniff and tentative taste test it's probably alright. I've never caused myself to have food poisoning so I must be doing something right.

My exceptions to the rule are for fish and chicken. I've also eaten both of them a couple of days after the use by date but I'm ultra cautious.
