By product of calves getting killed for meat? I guess that makes it ok for you but not for me.

i had a hard time finding vegan cheese here too. But I found a recipe in google, you need silken tofu, lemon juice and something else, can't remember it. I'll look for it again, but I am sure if you google it you'll find it.

Asian Markets have the best tofu and even it's unusual, at least here in Basel, it's even bio and excellent quality.

Good luck!

Müller in Rennweg in Zurich have a selection of cheeses, some of which are marked "Bio Lab" which have no animal rennet.

Re: Where can I buy Vegetarian cheese in Zurich?

I don't know if anyone has posted these links (I haven't read the whole thread).I also try to eat only veggie cheeses and the following has been a great help, though it is in German:

www.vegetarismus.ch/kaeseliste.htm

Emmi also has info on all its veggie cheeses, though I can't find a link.I'll have a look and will post it later hopefully.

Why don´t you check at kosher shops? Kosher cheese is made without rennet as this is prohibited by food laws.

I can't put up the Emmi link, but if you go to

www.emmi.ch

then click on 'Alimentation' then 'Informations spécifiques' and click on the 4th one down 'Savourer le fromage',you'll get the list. There's actually quite a choice.

That's for dairy free vegan cheese (not cheese at all actually). Vegetarian cheese is dairy but made with vegetarian rennet as opposed to animal. Most industrial cheese in the supermarkets will be vegetarian and most British cheese including artisan cheese is anyway, if in doubt, ask. If the cheesemonger doesn't know, go to one who does know such basic things about his cheese
