Re: RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

Great thread, especially since I'm getting a tad bored of Basel eateries too. I'd be particularly interested to hear more about places of recommendation in Weil as I live within a stones throw of the Weise. Of course I'll add to it myself if I go anywhere noteworthy.
Cheers
Caroline

Re: RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

Completely agree with the review of La Diligence in St. Louis.

I've eaten there a few times, flaming tarte* and steak on the other occasions. Both excellent, and nice not too expensive wine available (they can and will recommend a good one to go with your meal).

V. friendly staff and not at all a pretentious atmosphere either.

*I like to say this to myself in an Australian accent.

Last edited by BrianClose; 11.10.2012 at 13:28. Reason: clarification of what I'm saying is not pretentious is the atmosphere.

This is an Argentinian Steak House. Reasonably priced. Some of the reviews dont seem too great but i have been back many times. I htought the food delicious and the staff fairly friendly and helpful ... my friends also eat there regularly and enjoyed it!

When in the mood for a decent steak at a reasonable price this is the place to go (In my opinion)

Re: RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

Restaurant Zeus

Weil am Rhein

Easily the worst restaurant ive ever been to in my life.
I ordered chicken and my husband ordered some mixed grill thing.

Food arrived out (late). Instead of telling me they had no chicken they decided to make me some mixed grill thing too.... (I dont eat pork) This had lamb, pork and liver and some other meat ... i dont recognise.

The original chicken dish was suppsed to come with salad and vegetables but they gave me chips-

I thought I would try the food anyways, (foolishly i dont like ot complain).

I put the pork on my husbands plate and dedided to try the liver. It was vile. I had to question was it actually liver?!!!

Tasted the lamb... disgusting. Ate nothing. Husband didnt eat his either. There wasnt one thing on his plate that he found edible (Except the chips but didnt eat them either)

We complained. Told them it was the worst food we had ever tasted and we couldnt stomach it.

They still tried to charge us full price.

maison de l'inde
st louis (Across from the Géant)

Its newly opened so i havent seen any reviews.

Starters were fairly cheap. Naan bread i found expensive. 7 Euro for 1 Garlic Naan.
I had a chicken curry. I enjoyed it. NIce subtle spice. It cost about 12.90 i think..
My husband had a Vindaloo. Wasnt so hot (Spicy) but it had a nice build up of spice and was quite tasty. His was a little more expensive than mine. Maybe 14 euro. . .

Two old Indian guys cheffing. Speak great english and were very friendly.

We had a 35 minute wait for the food but it was fresh and the restaurant had only just opened.

Im looking forward to our next meal there.

Does anyone know of any reasonably priced Michelin starred rastaurant near the border?

when did you last go? we stopped going many many years ago as it was well "nasty"
Assuming you're talking about Le Palais d'Asie, we got takeaway from there as recently as a few weeks ago. I agree with your verdict that it's a bit nasty, but then I think all French Chinese food is a bit nasty (flavourless, drowning in sauce) so I'm grading on a curve.

It's cheap and it'll fill you up, but you'd never mistake it with real Chinese food. I've never understood this -- you get great, authentic Vietnamese food in France and the French seem to love it; but even in Paris, you've got to search long and hard to find an authentic Chinese restaurant.

there are plenty, best to look on viamichelin.com BUT dont take a michelin star as a 100% sure sign of good food. I have been to 1 place quite a lot, some nights it was excellent, other it was good.

as a rule the ratings represent:
One star indicates "very good cuisine in its category" if it is on your route.
Two-star ranking represents "excellent cuisine, worth a detour"
Rare three stars are awarded to restaurants offering "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey"

At the very top of the list, with three stars, try the Auberge de l'Ill

Thank you for this thread, I find it very useful!

Anyway, I recommend to try great Restaurant, Vineyard and Farmer Shop in one --> FÜNFSCHILLING in Fischingen (cca 14km from Basel). Prices are great, food is delicious! It is worth to try!!
No reservations are allowed, but be prepared for the fact, that whenever you come, it is always full and you have to look for free table.

Gengis Khan

Website: http://www.gk-grill.com/Saint-Louis/index.html

Well, we made the mistake of putting sauce on the grill. Silly us. The yhad to clear all the tables around us because there was so much smoke

In our defence, we did tell them its our first time, what do we do. In their defence.... we should have known better

So, IMO this is a novely restaurant. Go try it out. Then dont go back because if your paying to eat out its nice to have some one else cook and serve your food.

Theres one like it in Basel somewhere, you put the food on your plate but then give it to the chef to cook.

I have heard awesome reviews on this place. Have been told though, that is outdoors and dont be surprised if some one is stood at your table waiting for you to finish so they can sit there.-...

Re: RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

mmmm funfschilling is a victim of its own success, crap service, majority of items are out of packets. NEVER make a starter and main order at the same time, main will arrive 5 mins after the starter, make the main order when you have finished your starter.

I went some months ago against my better judgement for breakfast, they cocked that up, its not hard to bring coffee and orange juice is it?

I refuse to go there any more. 2/5 from me.

Le Salerno
32 rue Général de Gaulle
68220 Hésingue

Website: http://www.salerno-hesingue.eu/

Lovely Italian restaurant. They make some very nice pizza, big portions of steak, fab arabiatta.

Theres dinning outside if the weather permits.

The restaurant is lovely, the staff are friendly. The food is reasonably priced. They do a mean dessert. The service is quick and the house wine is fine

A sign of a good restaurant is if its regularly busy and this place is. We often go there for lunch with collegues or out for a dinner for 2.

When you walk in the door, you receive a great welcome and every one shakes your hand. Whe you leave everyone says good bye to you and you almost feel like you may be missed!

Oh and most of the menu is in english

Ninos Pizzeria, Weil am Rhein hauptstrasse 160.

has excellent pizzas, steaks and pizza dishes.

Lunchtimes are always packed and they offer a daily special normally for under 10 euro.

Turkish

Tadim Grill Haus
Hauptstraße 276,
79576 Weil-am-Rhein

This is my regular haunt and I've been numerous times with fellow EF members. Food is fresh, plentiful and very tasty. As well as the usual fair, they also do stews, freshly baked lahmuchan, vine leaves (dolma) etc.. It gets extrememly busy during peak times and weekends, so be prepared to wait.
