+1 for Le Cheval Blanc.

Beautiful food, and a scenic drive from Basel. It made me appreciate living where I do all over again.

Le Cheval Blanc
Feldbach, France

Absolutely great restaurant, our favorite. The menu they have on offer is fantastic value-for-money. For 30 EUR you have a great menu, that includes starter, main dish and desert.

Every single dish is excellent; and the owners are friendly. Place looks slightly upscale, but the prices are extremely reasonable.

Around 25km away from Basel. We have even cycled there once, beautiful trip.

Great list already!

However, did any one try http://www.tchopan.de/ ? Want to know if its a good restaurant or not.
Yep... It's good...looks a bit scruffy from the outside but very nice when you are thorough the door.

The food is afghan which is similar to Pakistani/Kashmiri rice based cuisine with subtle spicing. We will go back again, you'll need to book for Friday/Saturday as it gets busy.

It is, we had lunch there last weekend. (you mean the one close to the Asian supermarket, right? I don't think there are more Hong Kong restaurants in Lörrach )

Re: RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

Hi all,
expanding my alimentary options outside Basel since my regular place (Eintracht in Lörrach) has raised prices substantially and food quality a bit uneven the past few times I visited. Here's some others in Lörrach
- Osteria Mättle - little gem, mostly Italian but creative (have had veal, fish, and buffalo steak there - all excellent), prices 1/3 of Basel levels, friendly service. Look for historical artefacts around the dining room (WWI aeroplane pix since pilots used to eat here, and giant propeller saved from French reparation; also antique church clock mechanism) Suggest reservations for Fri/Saturdays, other days usually not problem just dropping in
http://www.osteria-maettle.de/eingang.html
- Symposium (in Hotel Meyerhof) - nice Greek menu, service so-so but food good. Try the greek bruschetta (unusual), also nice calamari served unbreaded and lightly fried with very light puffy potato slices I wish I knew how to prepare. Of course, they have Gyros meats and grilled lamb (not as good as the Gyros plates.)
http://symposium-loerrach.de/impressum/
Bon appétit!

Re: RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

In Lörrach, I have the feeling that the prices are going up a bit lately… still:

Italian pasta restaurant - Pastakönig Weinbrennerstraße 2
Best pasta italian cuisine in the region, I've heard they also sell fresh pasta. No pizza. Everything is fresh there, hence the reasonable but not huge choice of dishes. Excellent.

Greek restaurant - Mykonos Baslerstr. 146
Cuisine is far better than the usual tourist food in Greek taverna in so many places in Germany. This one is real food, the extras (vegetables, olives etc) are worth the couple of euros extra. Very good.

Nice initiatives! I am wondering of anyone can sort the list for restaurants accessible by public transport from Basel? Would really help....I plan to get a tri-region day ticket to venture out of Basel for food!

Many thanks!

Is it just me, or is this a bit cheeky? I guess you just have to google it yourself, and it's not bad to ask people if they could mention transport in future, but I find it a bit much to ask people to categorize something for your convenience

Apologies. Did not intend to sound rude. Just wondering if anyone actually went to most of the places by public transport and knows the way to go there by heart.

I agree with you. Would suggest that for future entries please include public transport option. Thanks.

Going to Lorrach is super easy. You can take S6 from Basel SBB or Badischer bahnhof. I think it is a 10 minute ride to Lorrach Bahnhof.

Also, I will add tot he list mona lisa ice cream parlor. Serves coffee, tea etc as well. Really nice after a good meal.

Re: RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

We recently discovered a fantastic buffet restaurant called Saveurs du monde (flavours of the world) in Blotzheim (literally next door to Basel Airport). Its usually pretty busy but we've never been turned away, and actually you want a buffet to be busy so the food is constantly refreshed.

What sets it apart from the ubiquitous, oriental-style buffets is its broad range of cuisines, quite literally from around the world, as well as a teppanyaki counter so you can make your own. Its other strength is the excellent desserts, which in many oriental places is merely an afterthought (e.g. cheap icecream, gelatine cubes and tinned lychees )

For those that know Tenmanya in Lorrach... I think this is better.

[QUOTE=Village Idiot;1685583]La Couronne d'Or
10 Rue Principale
Leymen, France

Website: http://www.couronne-leymen.ch/

TripAdvisor Review: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaur...in_Alsace.html

I really like La Couronne d’Or. From the outside, it’s nothing special to look at and you would likely drive right past without giving it a second look, but inside it’s a different story. With a mixture of long tables for big groups and smaller tables, it right away tells you its purpose: this is where families gather for a Saturday or Sunday lunch. In warmer months, ask for a table on the glass-enclosed terrace at the back of the restaurant.

The menu is seasonal, and changes every couple of months. Food is very typically French with a real emphasis on fresh ingredients. There’s a good a la carte menu, and a four-course ‘Menu Surprise’. We were going to order the ‘Menu Surprise’ but were put off by the waiter – apparently it’s something designed for the Swiss customers and features a rather bland meal tailored to their tastes.

hahaha a bland menu for the Swiss ! unbelievable. So you mean the Swiss go to that restaurant and order the same food as they have at home ? So funny. Nice warning though.

The surprise menu is actually quite nice and simply a combination of their normal items from the menu but smaller portions

Was planning to go with friends tomorrow evening, but "next door to Basel Airport" is actually a 5km walk, it seems, and my bike-less friends aren't up to it.

Have to go another time, with fellow cyclists.
