Was planning to go with friends tomorrow evening, but "next door to Basel Airport" is actually a 5km walk, it seems, and my bike-less friends aren't up to it.

Have to go another time, with fellow cyclists.
5 km?? It's 500M from Runway 15

Restaurant Goodfriend at Lörrach.

This is probably the best Chinese/Cantonese restaurant in the region. I'm Chinese and I've been to almost all Chinese restaurants in Basel and across the border. This is the only good one.

Re: RESTAURANT REVIEWS: Options *outside* Basel in DE/FR

I've been there a few times. When I've given them notice and booked, we've had great food; once managing to get almost proper dimsum for 20 people and once for Chinese NY where they even let us bring a traditional dish we'd cooked ourselves.

Other times, when we've just wandered in and ordered either dimsum or standard dishes, it's been awful.

I assume they have a decent chef who works some of the time, and then random staff muck in when he's not around, or busy, or just can't be arsed. It's a pity as we spoke with the owners when they first opened, and it's a break-away from the famous Good Friends in Berlin, so has good pedigree.

When did you last go, Lakkaland? There are no decent Chinese restaurants in this area, so Good Friends was a disappointment to me when it joined the mediocrity of all the others.

For some reason I can't seem to properly quote VI's post no.14
Quote:
Gasthaus Kranz
Basler Strasse 90,
79540 Lorrach,
Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany

TripAdvisor Review: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaur...rttemberg.html

By German standards, it was a little expensive at EUR15 for a starter and EUR25-30 for a main course, but the standard of cooking was superb. This is a place that focuses on the big classics and executes them really well.

The service was good, too – they were very patient with our poor German, and the maitre d’hotel came around frequently to make sure that everything was just right. He also controlled every dish that left the kitchen, and I saw him turn at least one plate back as it didn’t meet his standards.

The downside (not readily apparent from the photos on the website) is that the ambiance and décor is a trip down memory lane to early 1980s Germany. Don’t get me wrong – everything was in perfect order and immaculately clean, white tablecloths and napkins starched and silverware/glasses perfectly polished. But the entire restaurant is decorated in dark brown, with brown tiles and dark wood everywhere. They’ve decided to try to save electricity and use harsh, fluorescent overhead lights, and the whole place just comes across as kind of drab.

My wife commented, as we walked in, that it looked like we were walking into a 1970s hotel breakfast room.

And we were definitely the youngest clientele by 20 years – this is a place that appeals to the older diner. A shame, really, because that aside, I couldn’t fault a single thing about the meal. With an interior modernization, this could be a really great place. If you love good food and can overlook the slightly dull interior, this place is worth a visit.

These folks seem to read the EF - had dinner there on the weekend and the restaurant had been completely revamped to a rather modern design, nice lighting. The food is still great, the service attentative and very friendly and the wine list is impressive (unless you are allergic to German wines). They even have rooms in case you want to extend your wine tasting beyond the legal limit.
You can still opt for the time tunnel experience to the 70s by visiting their restrooms. Immaculately clean, but dark brown tiles...
