ZH Restaurant suggestions for work Christmas dinner?

I'm in charge of organizing christmas dinner for our department at work, roughly 60 people, and I'm looking for new suggestions in the Zürich area, in between those and the mid year, unoffical dinners I plan, I've run out of places. Are there any places you particularly enjoyed when in large groups, or better yet, work christmas parties of your own? It would be ideal to have a seperate room for our group, located in central Zürich, and I generally do a fixed menu of 3 or 4 choices with a budget of 70 Sfr a person.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Not central, but I can strongly recommend the Sonnenhof at Uetikon am See. They have a separate function room and the chef is really quite versatile. Ask for Fredy.

Runway 34 out at the airport is always good.

Check out Mike's place at ZH-Brunau for great US food: Fork & Bottle

Re: ZH Restaurant suggestions for work Christmas dinner?

I was initially thinking Fork and Bottle as well, my wife and I went there days after they opened and service was a bit spotty as they were no doubt getting into the groove of things, but I definitely saw the potential and think the concept is great. The only problem is the logistics of getting everyone down there after work in Oerlikon. The Sonnenhof would be more difficult in that respect.

Runway 34 looks close and intriguing, I'll give that a closer look. (It's too bad the one lounge has a max of 40 people though!)

Thanks to the both of you!

Up at Uetliberg you could have a nice option. Or there is a huge community center and rstaurant just by Albisgütli.

The Real Picky Gourmet blog may be a good place to start. He goes undercover in fair places and foul. Plenty of ZH restaurant threads on here too.

I really like Mike's place out at Brunau - the service was really good a couple of weeks ago when we went with a group of about 20 friends for brunch. Need to admit that I'm biased towards Runway 34 as I'm a shareholder, but don't let that stop you checking it out, I don't get any direct commission

Re: ZH Restaurant suggestions for work Christmas dinner?

We were at Runway34 two years ago or so.
Was very nice.
But I think you might have trouble finding a spot for this christmas.
The "popular" locations (and dates like Friday evening) are booked out pretty quickly. Unless you want to go for the ultra-expensive stuff (clouds, Uto Kulm etc.)
I think the person in charge at our company already booked it in late spring or so.

Re: ZH Restaurant suggestions for work Christmas dinner?

I really like the Linde Oberstrass, http://www.linde-oberstrass.ch/

They have a number of different rooms, each with its own character ranging from your neighborhood Beiz to upscale. I have celebrated my birthday with about 50 people in the Kaminzimmer, and we had a very good time, good food, friendly service. Plus they brew their own beer.

You may also look at http://www.restaurant-rubina.ch/ and just book the whole place for the evening. The food is good, the people make you feel welcome.

Once we went to http://www.chnuschper-huesli.ch/ which is a very low key place. It is located outside Zurich, which makes getting there part of the evening. You go up with the furnicular and then have to walk through the forest. You have a beautiful view over the city along the way. But given that it is really low key, this could be a bit risky, depending on people's expectations.

Re: ZH Restaurant suggestions for work Christmas dinner?

The Viadukt market where I work is taking private bookings for aperos and sit down dinners for parties now. They can take up to 200 people for a stand up apero and probably 100 for sit down dinners. Small aperos can be hosted during opening hours but we can stay open later for bigger groups.

Food and drink of course is all based on produce sold in the market. It's certainly not for everyone but if you want a funky venue for a different type of party it's great. It's also a lot cheaper than a restaurant or hotel. PM me and I'll pass any enquiries onto the events manager.

See if you can book a bus. It's not that expensive if they offer a regular service for the area anyway. It might be more otherwise but it's worth to give VBZ a call. Where is your office located? Could you all take the tram / train to Stadelhofen and then board another train?

We once had a Christmas dinner at Swissôtel in Oerlikon. Not in the restaurant itself but in a conference room. They had a buffet where we helped ourselves (three courses). I am not sure of the price but might be worth asking as well.

When we had the Christmass dinner within Zurich we would usually "rent" a tram and have the apero in the tram. That way everyone is on the same tram and apero is also already taken care of

For Christmas dinner last year, I did Les Halles last year for roughly 60 people, which was great and everyone seemed to enjoy it. For mid-year dinner which usually ran around 30 people (paid for by ourselves) I've done Cheyenne in Oerlikon (a little too loud, and they didn't want to allow people to pay seperately which we all would have liked.) and Krokodil on Langstrasse(great spanish food, nice separate room for about 30 people, very friendly and helpful staff).

I overheard our organizer saying that clouds was asking for something like 25k for 30 people. In 2013.

Yeah, that's a little nuts and slightly out of our budget. Only the banks can afford to have their Christmas parties there.

Ah, you're in Oerlikon! That being the case, to me there is only one answer: Dapur Indonesia.

I'll never repeat enough that the place is great. Many people have had very positive experiences there (check this thread). I've gone to dinner multiple times, we've organized two Rijstaffels with the EF(check threads here and here), I think it's the best.

Logistically, the restaurant could easily accommodate 60 people, but you have to check with the chef if they can/are willing to do it. I suggest you go in person, perhaps make an appointment outside of restaurant rush hours, and discuss directly with the chef - who is an awesome person and very talented professional. If they can handle the group, I think you could easily discuss with her about designing a special menu together, and about a fixed price.

Service at this place is top, and food is delicious. They have meat, fish, vegetarian options. A very nice, relaxed ambiance, and cool decor.

Good luck with the planning!

It's that time again, so I dug up this thread. Unfortunately I just found out that Dapur Indonesia can only do a max of 40 people.
