I am looking for some advice on buying some red and white Swiss wine for some very special friends back in the US. I want to give them wine that cannot be bought outside Switzerland so that it is special. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I wanted to do this a couple of years ago when I drove back to the UK for Christmas.

I went into a specialist wine shop, told the owner my budget and asked him to select three bottles of red and three bottles of white that were typical of or specific to different regions of Switzerland.

The wines - six different ones, I can't remember all the details - were all superb, and the overall price was reasonable (between 20 and 30 CHF per bottle).

Unless you or a friend are bringing the wine with you, it may be difficult to find a store that delivers it for you.

I would go for some of the special grape varieties you can only get here in Switzerland. Some suggestions:
- Heida Veritas from St Jodern Kellerei made in the highest vineyard in Europe from vines that are over 100 years old
- Petite Arvine (maybe Provins could deliver to the US??)
- Humagne Rouge or Cornalin - there's quite a few good producers in Valais
- Bondola from Azienda Mondo in Ticino (almost extinct grape variety)

These are all made from grape varieties that (almost) exclusively exist in Switzerland. Hope some of that works - regards, Hoss
