Ginger on Seefeldstrasse. Pricey but good. You can choose to sit in the 'front' of the restaurant with the conveyor belt....or in the 'back' where you will have traditional waited service (consistent with the crap Swiss service you'd expect). Go with the mindset that you're there for decent sushi (ignoring the uppity clientele at times and crap service).

Disclaimer - been a year since i was there.
Here another fan of Ginger!

Furthermore, my mrs. her Japanese colleagues claim Bimi (Zurich Seefeld - www.swissbimi.ch) and Samurai are the best ones around, although Japanese are usually more into their soya dishes (they only eat sushi only on special occasions).

Re: Best Sushi Bars...

I have been to Ginger and it is good. Expensive but good. The menu is simple if you compare it to many sushi fusion restaurants that can be found around Europe but it is a reasonable choice if you miss eating sushi!

Re: Best Sushi Bars...

Any GOOD sushi bar is going to be inherantly expensive as the raw fish needs to be brought in daily and needs to be very fresh.

Fish is expensive here anyway. As it needs to be fresh, daily there is a lot of waste and this is included in the price, like it or not.

A good restauranter will know quite accurately what he needs per day, but there is some that has to be wasted, come whatever.

A cheap sushi bar is really not worth bothering with as the fish used is either cheap or not fresh, or both !

Try the one in Vevey,Ichioshi there is also one in Geneva that is excellent but it's already very crowded and difficult to get a table, so you'll have to find that out yourself, starts with a "K".....Good luck finding it, it's worth it

Re: Best Sushi Bars...

I have to say the ready sushi in Globus, Zurich was pretty decent and just slightly more expensive than yooji's. If you want a quick one I would suggest you buy from there! Aki in Zug is pretty good too and not too expensive, ran by Japanese chefs. Just its a little tiny n only tables available.

The cheapest n nicest sushi I have so far is at Lago, Konstanz..it is a bit of a drive but all worth, konstanz is a nice little town, best for a day shopping (many shops n half Swiss price for same products!) n nice dine out!

I doubt very much that most of the fish here is "fresh" as given the location of Switzerland it is not really possible. I suspect most of the fish used for sushi, as in most parts of Europe have been flash frozen on the boats.

Re: Best Sushi Bars...

Tenmanya, Laufenburg.

Quality, freshness, service, and a third the price of Zurich.

If you live in Baden or Aargau, it's 30 minutes drive.

Re: Best Sushi Bars...

I've tried a couple of sushi places in Zürich, and Samurai was the best in terms of taste and quality compared to others in Zürich. There's also a chance that you will get things other than the usual tuna/salmon that many people seem to be obsessed with. It's still not at the top of my list compared to places I've been in NY and SF.

Negishi is gross (dry-ish fish, nothing interesting, the usual salmon/tuna mix) and Barfüsser is ok but nothing special. I haven't tried Yooji, but just by looking at their sushi you can tell it will be an overpressed rice bomb. I've taken to making my own, veggie rolls are pretty easy and Nishi's Japan shop sells pretty good quality sushi grade salmon/scallops/etc.

I found this place to be excellent when I visited last week, particularly the caterpillar role - its about a 5min walk from Altstetten station

Re: Best Sushi Bars...

oishii have a place in basel which I've never been to because the prices are laughable..(this is 'ok' sushi.. nothing special.. but pretty good).. but they now have a restaurant in loerrach which has the same items.. with.. drum roll.. an all you can eat buffet for 30 Euros (just 13 Euros for weekday lunch !!! (although it is a reduced menu))

once again... i love living at the border...

Re: Best Sushi Bars...

It seems Samuri is the place to try! We missed plentiful/good sushi bars since moving from Singapore to Zurich. However, we found the sushi bar in Globus (Stadelhofen) to be very good. Well worth checking out.

Re: Best Sushi Bars...

I think Kai (http://www.kaibar.ch/) is pretty good, even though I slightly prefer Samurai. Also, Lake Side (http://www.lake-side.ch/) have a few Sushi rolls in their menu, which are super expensive, but those I tried were really good.

Samurai for the authentic experience, Ginger for something a bit more creative.

In Zug you should definitely consider this one: http://www.akisushi.ch/ a bit expensive but worth every penny.
