Buy Absinth in Zürich

Has anyone seen a store selling absinthe in the Zurich area? The original 70-73% kind. An actual store and not an online shop possibly.
Many thanks

Re: Buy Absinth in Zürich

Swiss absinthe from the Val-de-Travers is sold at one of the stalls at the Viadult market. But even better is to come and visit the Val-de-Travers where absinthe was first made, and go to several distilleries to sample - or to the train station shop in Noiraigue where they sell all the different brands from the area, or the shop at the Presta Asphalt mines between Noiraigue and Travers. Come by train, absinthe and driving don't mix. There is an optional train stop for the Presta Asphalt mines - well worth a visit and you can eat the traditional miner's fare there, ham baked in asphalt, with Gratin Dauphinois and salad, and absinthe ice-cream soufflé for dessert. (train from Neuchatel- a lovely ride).

Check all the distillers on the interprofession de l'absinthe website too.

www.absinthe-interprofession.ch

Willy Bovet in Motiers (right next to the railway station - with the excellent Hotel des Six Communes restaurant next door) makes one 77% absinthe, but most traditional absinthe are in the 50% mark.

They have it at the world beer shop in zurich's hauptbahnhof (they sell more than just beer), it's close to a shop called valentino's.

Re: Buy Absinth in Zürich

Thanks everyone - I never knew there was a "world beer shop". Odile: it's more like purchasing than drinking, so if you could give some GPS/driving directions, and maybe opening hours, that would be great. Thank you very much.

Re: Buy Absinth in Zürich

Go to the TCS (Touring Club Suisse, the equivalent of the RAC or AA in UK, or triple A in US) click on English and then on itineraries and get very precise directions and maps with distance and estimated time.

Shops are closed on a Sunday, but the Presta Asphalt mine between Travers and Couvet is opened on Sundays, and so is the Tourist Info and shop at Noiraigue railway station. Basically aim for Neuchatel, and then follow directions for Val-de-Travers/Pontarlier. Noiraigue is approx 20 minutes from Neuchatel, and Travers a few minutes further. Most of the distilleries can be visited by appointment, more or less anytime. If you do come over and need assistance, or want to meet for lunch or a drink at the Presta Asphalt Mine, tell me when and I'll try to meet. Same for visits to distilleries if you wish - as I know many of the distillers. The advantage of the 2 places mentioned above is that they sell all the local absinthes, and also absinthe chocolate and other related products.

Re: Buy Absinth in Zürich

Come to the new Museum on Absinthe 'La Maison de l'Absinthe' in Môtiers, Val-de-Travers- 2 mins walk from the train station. Really interesting Museum on the history of absinthe, the prohibition period and how it became legal again in 2005- about some of the local clandestine distillers, and much more. A bar too for tastings- and 90 local absinthes for sale- with 3 traditional distillers within a couple minutes, and the great Auberge des Six Communes for lunch.

www.maison-absinthe.ch

Happy to give you a private guided visit.

JBZ86- what brand is yours? Not that awful green Czech stuff people set a light to

www.absinthe-interprofession.ch

Our favourite is in the next village, Boveresse (10 mins walk from Môtiers station) Martin- Phillipe is the son of the original distiller and took over the distillery in a beautiful house built 1777, and he speaks excellent English is you want to contact him, or ship you some bottle- with its own traditional under roof absinthe dryer- wonderful. His ORIGINALE is 72% and amazing and a recent Gold medal winner.

Re: Buy Absinth in Zürich

I can't drink absinthe, anymore.
When I previously drunk it, it gave me digestive problems - every time I broke wind, instead of the normal 'raspberry' noise, it sounded like a Japanese motorbike.

I even had to go to the doctors ....... he just shook his head and laughed:

- "It's obvious", he said ...... "absinthe makes the fart go Honda".

Brought to you by a working search function.

Don't keep absinthe in a fridge; it can separate the anethole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anethole) out of solution.

Re: Buy Absinth in Zürich

There is now a new Museum, in the old Courthouse where illegal distillers used to be judged and fined- in the lovely village of Môtiers (NE) just a couple of minutes from the train station, and with the lovely Auberge des Six Communes for a great meal. It is a very modern Museum all about the history of absinthe, from the Romans and on to the invention of distilled absinthe in this area, and the 100 year prohibition and its re-legalisation 10 years ago. There are over 90 local absinthes for sale there, as well as other related products and paraphenalia, including glasses, spoons and very modern square fountains. Week-end after next, there is a cooking demo for 'soufflé à l'absinthe' (booking necessary).

www.maison-absinthe.ch

If you want a private guided visit, just get in touch- will be organising a visit for EF later this Spring.

mg2012- which absinthe is that at Denner for 20CHF (for a full bottle?)

But its consumption is quite detrimental to one's hearing ability. Take that Dutch artist for example, the one who painted all the sunflowers ...
